Outcomes

This learning outcome helps educators learn to identify gaps in their students' performance. Educators must perform thorough evaluations and collection of data to accurately identify student performance gaps. Far too often, educators do not fully approach this in the correct method, causing performance gaps, and then the interventions they develop do not adequately address the issue. This causes the performance gaps not to be improved.

MEDT 7490: Media and Visual Literacy and Teaching

Comprehensive Instructional Design Plan

For this project, I worked with a teacher at my school to come up with an instructional design plan to help to build a stronger instructional foundation for her language arts class. The teacher expressed a desire for more effective and beneficial resources for her 3rd-grade students to use as a tool when learning the parts of speech. She expressed that teaching parts of speech can be challenging with her 3rd-grade students because they are often left very confused by the material. She felt that this subject area is extremely confusing and tedious, so she stated that she wished for a hands-on learning activity that is multi-modal. MEDT 8465: Human Performance Improvement

Human Performance Improvement Report

This group project gave my group the opportunity to identify a performance problem in middle school science teachers. Our group developed a detailed report that identified the performance problem, data determining the problem, the performance gap, potential causes, and proposed solutions to help support narrowing the gap in teacher performance. Challenges

Both of these projects were challenging because I took on a task that I have never done. Both projects required me to identify areas of weakness and provide solutions to improve these performance gaps. The Comprehensive Instructional Design plan that I completed for MEDT 7490 allowed me to focus on an academic area and how to provide better technology and resources to help improve student engagement and learning. I created more student-centered activities using technology which helped solve a solution to meeting her student's academic needs. Working as a physical education teacher, I found this task challenging. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the results of my plan. The teacher was happy with the instructional plan I designed for her and loved the activities and resources I created. The Human Performance Improvement Report that I did for MEDT 8465 focused on the performance gaps of science teachers in a middle school. This was a group project where my team had to identify a problem and develop a list of solutions to improve the performance gap. The biggest challenge was that I took this class during the summer. Taking the class during the summer presented issues in getting input from staff, administration, parents, and the community.

Rationale for Artifacts

These projects display my understanding of SLO 3. The assignments required me to identify a problem and cause for performance gaps. Then, I developed strategies and solutions to improve the performance gaps, whether it was for students or teachers. For artifact one, I worked with a teacher to develop materials and resources to improve the performance gap in her students' learning parts of speech. The teacher wanted more hands-on activities to help improve her students' engagement and learning. Artifact one shows the performance gap in her students' learning, so I developed resources and material to help narrow that gap. Artifact 2 focused on identifying a performance gap in middle school science teachers and their ability to communicate student academic performance to their guardians promptly. My group had to identify reasons for this performance gap and develop strategies and solutions to narrow this performance gap.

Reflection

As I reflect on achieving this SLO, I have seen how important it is to identify our students' strengths and weaknesses. I learned the importance of identifying gaps in human performance and developing strategies to close those gaps. Evaluating students daily is crucial and will lead to identifying performance gaps. This information will help identify areas of improvement that will better meet the needs of my students and close the gaps. Both of these projects demonstrate my understanding of SLO 3. They display my skills and knowledge of using systemic approaches to closing human performance gaps whether in students or adults.
