Excellence in Teaching

Spring 2020 semester will be a semester that we'll never forget. Continuing to deliver remote instruction in the midst of a global pandemic presented many challenges. Yet, despite its challenges, faculty were creative, innovative, and extremely resilient in support of student success. In an effort to capture and share stories of triumph, we interviewed a few faculty colleagues to encourage sharing of best practices, lessons learned and sheer survival. Enjoy the following stories shared in our series title, "I survived Spring 2020...."

Quality Online Teaching and Learning w/ Canvas Expands. . . BOOM!

COVID-19 will forever be etched in our memories as a historic moment where our day to day routines became uncertain. As faculty, we had to restructure our traditional face-to-face courses and prepare to teach remotely. The CTTL has sponsored a Quality Online Learning and Teaching with Canvas (QOTL) training every semester, however, with COVID-19, increased the training exponentially by offering additional cohorts in the late Spring semester and Summer. The goal of this training was to learn best practices for designing an Online/Hybrid courses in Canvas guided by the Online Education Initiative (OEI) Course Design Rubric, and the Peralta Equity Rubric. The training was condensed into a three-week format. With almost 60 participants in our last Spring cohort and over 100 in our Summer cohort, the need for additional support was vital for the success of the training. For the first time, QOTL incorporated Teaching Assistants, who helped support training facilitation, support and office hours. Our TAs this semester include: Dr. Safiyyah Forbes, Michelle Clark, Melissa Irish, Kim Saccio-Kent, Ame Maloney, and Kristina Brower. In addition to the TAs we are working with a group of faculty Online Learning Peer Mentors, who provide mentees one-on-one support post-training and into their first semester facilitating a fully-online course. Lastly, to round of the comprehensive support, we launched our first cycle of Peer Online Course Review (POCR) with a team of OEI certified reviewers. If you expertise in teaching online and are interested in supporting faculty colleagues, please reach out to the Distance Education Team.
