Photo Etching is primarily used by Jewellery and Metalwork students. We have the facilities to etch onto Copper, Brass and Copper Alloy (Gilding metal) using Ferric Chloride.
Students are required to have an induction into this process before they are able to book. To book an induction either visit the Printmaking Workshop HPO 16. -2. 03 or email acmprintmaking@shu.ac.uk.
Students who have had their induction can make use of the step by step video refreshers below.
*When booking via Connect2 students will need to book two sessions with 24hrs between the plate lamination and the etching session. See below for more info.
The first session is for preparing and laminating your plate. Book - "Safe Light Room - Photo Etch / Cyanotype" on Connect2.
Students must leave a period of 24hrs in between the lamination and etching process. This is to allow the Photo Etch Resist film to fully bond with the plate.
The second session is where students expose, develop and etch their plates. Book - "Photo Etch" on Connect2.
These videos are to help support students who have previously had an induction in Photo Etching. We understand that Photo Etching is quite a long and involved process with many steps so we have created a series of videos refreshers to help guide students along the way.
