Please note that this site is a work in progress and some pages are not yet complete. Please bear with us while we complete the remaining pages.
This site has been created as an easy access area to find resources relating to clinical skills or 'proficiencies' you might be expected to become familiar with in order to meet the requirements of your nursing course and placements. You might find the site particularly useful for proficiencies that you are having difficulty getting 'signed off' on placement, as engaging with the resources here will help you to demonstrate what you have done to work towards certain proficiencies. Alternatively, you may simply find this site useful to find learning materials to help you in developing your knowledge, skills and understanding relating to clinical skills that you might be expected to perform as a nurse.
On the pages of this site you will be able to access opportunities to support you in developing your knowledge and understanding around some of the clinical skills that you will need to be familiar with in order to complete the sign off of your MYEPAD document.
The site focuses on some of the clinical skills and procedures contained in Annexe B of the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses. If you'd like to view the full document, you can find it here: https://www.nmc.org.uk/standards/standards-for-nurses/standards-of-proficiency-for-registered-nurses/
When performing clinical skills and procedures, please always remember to:
do so under the appropriate supervision of a properly trained, experienced and competent person
always first explain the procedure to the patient and gain their consent, before undertaking the procedure
always practice according to the appropriate policies and procedures within the Trust or placement area you are working in
remember to comply carefully with guidance or policies around infection prevention and control, use of PPE (personal protective equipment), handwashing, sharps safety, safe disposal of healthcare waste, and documentation. Read more about Infection Prevention and Control on ClinicalSkills.net here.
HOW TO LOGIN TO CLINICALSKILLS.NET
For further information on how to login to your ClinicalSkills.net account please click here: How to Login to ClinicalSkills.net
Use the menu bar on the left of the page to jump to the clinical skill you wish to look at. The skills are listed in alphabetical order. If the page has a drop down arrow this indicates that there is separate child information available (click the arrow to open the child nursing page), if not the skill is a generic skill for an adult or child patient. On each page you will find useful items including:
links to materials you might want to read
links to illustrated procedural guides on ClinicalSkills.net
videos that you might find useful to watch to help you familiarise yourself with undertaking the skill
procedural checklists that you can use either online (if you want to use these on an iPad or copies you can print out)
interactive resources
quizzes to test your knowledge
other useful resources
Make sure you keep evidence of the activities you complete whilst using the resources on this site, including logging any videos, reading or other materials you engage with. This will help you when you present your evidence to your Practice Assessor, to demonstrate your work towards meeting elements of the nursing procedures contained in Annexe B of the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses, and will therefore help your Practice Assessor to be able to sign you off where required if you have met the necessary criteria.
Reflecting on your activities is also really important and good evidence to show what you have learnt from undertaking the activities - and how this will impact on your practice or yourself as a developing nurse.
For writing a reflection you may wish to use a template within the MYEPAD document itself (if you use this) or the Reflective Accounts Form from the NMC which can be found at the following link: http://revalidation.nmc.org.uk/download-resources/forms-and-templates.html. Alternatively, you may have your own template that you prefer to follow.
