Glucose is transported in the blood and is the primary energy source utilised by the body. Certain conditions can cause the body to be able to partially or fully regulate the levels of glucose in the blood causing both short and long term consequences. The most common of these conditions is diabetes. Other causes of abnormal blood glucose levels do exist and testing of blood glucose levels should be considered in those presenting with an altered mental state, unconsciousness and other related presentations.
Monitoring blood glucose levels can be an important part of managing an individual's diabetes depending on the type of diabetes and their management. Many people who self monitor their blood glucose do so independently but others may either need ongoing support with this or be less independent during periods of ill health.
In the UK blood glucose levels are measured in millimoles per litre (mmol/l) although in other countries such as the USA you may see it recorded as milligrams per decilitre (mg/dL).
