Education Abroad Core Values

EDUCATION ABROAD MISSION

Maryville College is committed to the principle that global experiences and perspectives are essential to any education. To that end, we strive to provide opportunities for the Maryville College community to develop intercultural understanding, global perspective, and appreciation for the breadth, diversity and richness of human experience in its various social and cultural dimensions.

The Maryville College education abroad program gives students the opportunity to participate on life-changing education abroad programs. Our programs offer students the opportunity to:

CORE VALUES:

Quality & Affordability | Our philosophy is to find the highest quality of programs at a reasonable price.

Diversity of Access | Travel abroad should not be just for the most privileged. We are committed to providing access to underrepresented populations in study abroad.

Immersion | “Living like a Local” is about encouraging students to seek out hos community voices, challenges, and strengths as a part of travel plans. We seek opportunities to partner with organizations and institutions where students can engage with the communities they become part of.

Global Competency | While immersion contributes to developing global competency, we believe that we need to be intentional about building global competency across all of our global opportunities. This generation of students lives in an interconnected, diverse, and rapidly changing world. Global (intercultural) competency is one of the main tools we, as educators, can give students to thrive in this new environment. To achieve this, we need a globally focused curriculum and goals and strategies for each program we offer. Global competency is also one of the skills identified by both national and local employers as needed in graduates.

Sustainable Travel | Sustainable travel aims towards preserving the local communities, authenticity and resources of the destination you visit. It refers to three main aspects of the impact that travel has on communities and places: the socio-cultural, environmental and economic impact. We are committed to making a positive impact on the UN Sustainable Development Goals through our education abroad program.

Support | MC Scots Abroad programs offer wrap-around support that includes individual  advising, a pre-departure course to help you prepare, local coordinators/directors onsite, and re-entry programs to help you unpack your experience.
