Travel and Return Guidelines

If you are planning to travel, here’s what you need to know. Effective immediately, the college has suspended all non-essential, college-sponsored international and domestic travel over the spring break and through the month of May. The college may extend this practice further into the summer in response to the local, national and global situations. See the following FAQs for more information.

Q: What about upcoming college-sponsored travel abroad?

To mitigate the risk of increased personal and communal viral exposure to COVID-19, the college has suspended all college-sponsored international travel involving students over the spring break and through the month of May. The college may extend this practice further into the summer in response to the local, national and global situations.

Canisius travelers must defer all non-essential travel to locations where the CDC has issued a Level 3 or 4 travel advisory (Do not travel)

Canisius travelers with travel to locations where the CDC has issued a Level 2 advisory (Practice enhanced precautions) need approval from the vice president of their division.

Canisius strongly recommends that all community members reconsider any international or domestic travel including conference and business travel, until after graduation 2020. Those who plan to travel should discuss their plans with their supervisors and be prepared for trip interruptions and possible delays in return to campus.

It is strongly recommended that travelers follow the above CDC advisories when considering personal travel. This is particularly important for those who may have health considerations that make exposure to COVID-19 a higher risk.

Q: What are my options if I’ve already incurred expenses for upcoming travel that has been cancelled, due to COVID-19?

Any member of the college community whose travel plans are impacted should work with his/her program director (i.e. Office of Study Abroad, Campus Ministry, Institute for Global Engagement, or the Deans) to manage program cancellations.

In recognition of the potential for financial hardship caused by travel cancellations, we ask that students and employees report specific financial concerns to Brian Smith, the Director of International Partnerships/Study Abroad, at smith@canisius.edu.

Q: Are there other travel restrictions?

With spring break upon us and Easter break quickly approaching, the college urges all members of the community to consider their travel plans, international and domestic, in light of the spread of COVID-19. The situation domestically and internationally is changing daily. If you plan to travel anywhere in the world for either personal or college-sponsored trips, we encourage you to register your travel through the Online Travel Registry to self-report your travel plans.

In addition to evolving risk profiles, travel and entry restrictions may change at any time, creating travel interruptions and unanticipated delays affecting the ability of students, faculty and staff to return to campus.

Travelers should be prepared for trip interruptions and delays and be prepared to self-isolate for 14 days should their destination be affected by an outbreak of the virus.

All Canisius travelers are advised to regularly check the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention traveler’s health resources and U.S. State Department travel advisories for advice regarding their destination as information and advisories are changing rapidly.

Q: Who do I need to contact before returning to campus after traveling abroad?

All travelers returning to campus or visiting Canisius College must follow the guidelines below:

- Canisius travelers returning from CDC Level 3 or 4 countries must self-quarantine for 14 days before returning to campus

- Canisius travelers returning from CDC Level 2 countries may be required to self-quarantine for 14 days and should not return to campus until they have contacted Pat Creahan, director of the college’s health center, at (716) 888-2610 for the latest guidance in accordance with local and state health authorities and the CDC.

Q: What if I want to visit Canisius College?

Visitors to campus who are not college faculty, staff or students must also adhere to the guidelines above. Visitors from regions rated Level 3 or 4 by the CDC must self-quarantine for 14 days before coming to campus, while visitors from regions rated Level 2 should have their Canisius host contact the college’s Health Center ahead of their visit to determine relevant guidelines with respect to their visit.

Q: What is the college doing about community members who do not self-report and self-quarantine?

The college is urging anyone who has traveled abroad to self-monitor their health and, if they are returning from a CDC Level 3 country or region, to self-quarantine for 14 days. The voluntary cooperation of all members of our community is critical to prevent disease transmission and to protect the health and safety of the university community.

Q: I was scheduled to participate in a service-immersion experience during the spring 2020 semester. Has this been cancelled?

The college has suspended all nonessential, college-sponsored domestic and international travel through the month of May. This includes all local and international service trips. The college may extend this practice further into the summer in response to the local, national and global situations.

Q: What is Canisius College recommending for those students currently involved in study abroad programs for the spring 2020 semester?

The college has suspended all nonessential, college-sponsored domestic and international travel through the month of May. This includes all local and international service trips. The college may extend this practice further into the summer in response to the local, national and global situations.

Q: What should I do if I’m planning to travel abroad?

At this time, the ECDOH recommends consulting the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine COVID-19 Global Cases Map when planning a trip. People with compromised immune systems and the elderly should stay away from these areas. Others will need to weigh the benefits and risks of traveling to areas with confirmed cases. Also, please keep in mind that this is a rapidly changing situation and other areas may be added and numbers may increase at any given time.

Q: Should I cancel my trip out of the country?

This is a rapidly changing situation. Currently, the ECDO is quarantining individuals for up to 14 days who travel from countries designated by the CDC as “Level 3.” Individuals who have travel plans outside the United States should consult the CDC Travel Information website for the most recent guidance. Travelers who return from these areas are subject to quarantine for 14 days following their return to Erie County.
