At Canisius, we are dedicated to protecting the health and safety of every member of our community. As such, we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation globally and in the United States very closely. The potential public health threat posed by the virus is high, both globally and in the United States; individual risk is dependent on exposure.

March 13, 2020 Message to Resident Students Regarding Library Services

Students:

I wanted to provide you with some library-related information as the College moves to online instruction for the next few weeks.

This page will has information about remote access to library resources and staff: https://library.canisius.edu/resources-and-guide-remote-library-access

Librarians are available by phone, email, and chat to assist you or your students as needed; contact info is at the link above.

The library will reduce opening hours. During break we will be open 8am-5pm. Starting Monday, 3/23, we will be open 12pm-8pm. Our hours will be 12pm-8pm Sunday-Thursday. We will reevaluate hours based on demand and the ongoing situation, so please check the library web site or call to make sure we are open before coming to the library.

We have extended due dates so that all items currently checked out will be not be due until April 23, 2020 (or later if the original due date was after April 23, 2020).

If your students need access to print material you have on reserve, please contact Matt Kochan (kochanm@canisius.edu). We may be able to scan the relevant parts and send them to you to post on D2L. If students need access to DVD’s you have on reserve, please contact the Media Center to see about making them available through D2L.

As of today, interlibrary loan and Connect NY borrowing & lending are still operational but will likely take longer due to reduced staffing at some sites and delivery delays. The web page linked above will have the most current information on these services, so please check back regularly.

If you or your students need assistance from the library, please do not hesitate to call us at 716-888-8411, or email us at library@canisius.edu

March 12, 2020 President's Message on New Decisions to Respond to the COVID-19 Situation: Canisius Moves to Remote Instruction and Closes Residence Halls

March 11, 2020 Message to Resident Students from the VP for Student Affairs

Dear residential students,

I wanted to send a quick follow up email to what you all should have received last night from President Hurley to emphasize a few important items.

1. I want to make you aware that the update that you received from the President was also shared with your parents or family members so that they can be active participants in the planning for your health and well-being. I want to assure you and your parents our strategy involves a careful balancing of the needs of any student who becomes ill and the rest of the campus that could be affected by exposure to the coronavirus. Our strategy has been developed in consultation with government authorities and higher education associations and peer institutions.

2. Be aware that things are developing rapidly as this virus spreads. The college Crisis Response team is meeting daily to monitor developments and will keep you informed as decisions are made.

3. I strongly encourage you to take your essential items with you as you prepare to leave for Spring Break (including your course materials and textbooks) in the case that the College moves to the online academic continuation plan and decides to close the residence halls.

4. If the college decides to close residential housing, you will receive more information at that time in terms of how long you will have to make arrangements to leave (typically, you will have 48 hours—of course, you make leave your bulky items in your room and make arrangements to pick these items up at a later date).

While we are not planning to activate either the academic continuation plan or to shut down the residence halls at this moment, this can change rapidly. This was the case in Ohio yesterday, where the Governor issued a statement asking all institutions of higher education in Ohio to move to online options for the remainder of the semester. Please check your Canisius email or the college website regularly for updates.

I will be in the dining hall this Thursdayand Friday with the Vice President for Academic Affairs from noon until 1pmshould any of you wish to meet in person to ask any questions you may have.

We will keep you informed as decisions are made and will certainly keep each of you in our prayers as we move through this crisis together.

Sincerely,

Daniel A. Dentino, Ph.D.

Q: What is Canisius doing to keep the campus community informed?

Canisius is using multiple communications channels to share the latest news and information about coronavirus to students, parents, faculty and staff including:

  • Creation of a website, www.canisius.edu/covid19

  • Publishing information in the college’s employee newsletter, The Dome

  • Informing parents through the Griff Center’s parent newsletter[SEC1]

  • Contacting individuals who may have recently traveled in areas affected by COVID-19

  • Posting information on the MyCanisius portal (my.canisius.edu)

  • Emailing the campus community at large

The college is developing its plans and communications in accordance with guidance issued by the New York State Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Erie County Health Department.

Q: How will Canisius notify the college community if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19?

The Erie County Health Department is the official source of information about confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Canisius or anywhere in the county. The college will work closely with the Erie County Department of Health if a notification is needed. At this time, the ECDH reports there are no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in Erie County, where the Canisius campus is located.
