Q. What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Symptoms of COVID-19

Symptoms of COVID-19 can range from mild or severe. The most common symptoms are:

  • Fever or feeliing feverish

  • Muscle aches and/or fatigue

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath

In some cases individuals experience nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea before fever or cough onset.

Symptoms may appear 2 -14 days after exposure to COVID-19.


Q: What should I do if I’m feeling sick?

If you become ill, do not come to classes, and do not come to work. Students should contact the college’s Health Center at (716) 888-2610 or your primary healthcare provider, and faculty and staff should contact their healthcare providers.


Q: What if I start to show symptoms of illness?

Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, feeling feverish, fatigue, body aches, cough and trouble breathing.

Students who experience symptoms should call their health care provider or Student Health at 716-888-2610 FIRST before going for care.

Student Health will be open Monday- Friday from 9 am to 3:45 pm throughout the semester. To protect the health and safety of our students and our staff, students must call Student Health first to be screened for symptoms of COVID-19 before appointments are made. The on line scheduler available on myCanisiusHealth has been disabled preventing self scheduling and walk in appointments are no longer available.

Employees should contact their health care providers for care.

Anyone seeking medical care should wear a mask if one is available.

In the event of worsening symptoms or a medical emergency, call 911 for ambulance transport to the closest hospital.

The situation is rapidly changing. Please contact your local health department after travel both domestic and international to determine if quarantine is recommended and monitor all CDC travel advisories for updated information.

Q: All of this change and uncertainty is making me feel overwhelmed. What can I do?

During the Canisius College Online Academic Continuation period, the Counseling Center has suspended in-person counseling services. Counselors will be available for phone consultations during normal college business hours (M-F 8:30am-4:30pm). To connect with a counselor via phone during college business hours, please call the Counseling Center at 716-888-2620. You may also send an email to counsel@canisius.edu to request a phone consultation with a counselor during college business hours.

In the case of a mental health emergency, a counselor on call is available after college business hours. To contact the counselor on call, call Public Safety at (716) 888-2330. For those living in Erie County, you can also call Crisis Services’ 24-hour hotline at 716-834-3131. For those outside of Erie County, call the Suicide Prevention Life Line at 800-273-8255. To contact the Crisis Textline, text HOME to 741741.

Q: What steps can I take to stay healthy?

  • Wash your hands frequently throughout the day with soap and water. Lather up and rub hands together for 20 seconds then rinse under running water.

  • If soap and water is not available use a 60% or high alcohol based hand sanitizer. Apply an ample amount of hand sanitizer on your hands and rub together for 20 seconds until your hands dry.

  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth as germs enter the body through these openings.

  • Avoid sick persons staying 6 feet or more away from anyone coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose.

  • Avoid crowded places and keep a social distance of 6 feet from others.

  • Keep your house and room clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily with a disinfecting wipe or spray. Remember to include your cell phone, video game controllers, TV remotes and computer key boards.

  • Carry disinfecting wipes and clean surfaces on airplanes, kiosks, shared keyboards and other shared technology.

  • Get 8-10 hours of sleep each night

  • Eat a well-balanced diet with at least 5 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables each day

  • Reduce stress through exercise, meditation, hobbies and other activities that relax you.

  • If you are sick, please stay home and contact your medical provider.
