Philosophy

The athletic programs within the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District are an important part of the educational experience at Los Altos High School, Mountain View High School, and Alta Vista High School. This handbook provides guidelines and expectations for all coaches and athletic staff to help ensure a safe, positive, and successful experience for student-athletes. Coaches are responsible for upholding district policies, modeling professionalism, and creating an environment built on respect, integrity, sportsmanship, and accountability.

MVLA athletics are committed to providing equitable opportunities for all students. In accordance with Title IX, the district supports equal access and treatment for all student-athletes regardless of gender. The district also values diversity, equity, and inclusion by fostering athletic programs that welcome and respect students of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities. Athletics are intended to help students develop leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, ethical behavior, and school pride through meaningful participation and competition.

The district is also committed to supporting student-athletes with disabilities through reasonable accommodations and accessible opportunities in alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 guidelines. Participation in interscholastic athletics is voluntary and considered a privilege that carries responsibilities both on and off the field of play. Student-athletes are expected to follow team, school, and district expectations, and coaches play an essential role in helping students understand and uphold these standards.
