Mustang Virtual Academy (MVA)

Students who are accepted into the MVA will complete all coursework through an online content management system (CMS)All work will be completed 100% off campus.

See below for further details:

PLEASE NOTE: The details on this page are subject to change as directives are provided by governing authorities and/or health officials or as environmental conditions change. Please check back for the latest accurate information.

What is the Mustang Virtual Academy (MVA)?

Students who are accepted into the MVA will complete all coursework through an online platform called Edgenuity (7th-12th grade), and must provide their own device and connectivity.  All work will be completed 100% off campus.

A Virtual Learning Program means the student takes all of his/her courses in a virtual setting away from the school. A certified teacher directs the instruction. Tutoring, assistance and assessments will be given at an agreed upon location, but no classes require regular physical attendance. The Virtual Learning option is a minimum of a one semester commitment.

Virtual learning may be offered at all grade levels, K-12, based upon enrollment and availability.

MVA will require support from caring adults at home and within the online classroom environment. Activities are designed to ensure that students continue learning at the pace of the current MPS scope and sequence as well as continue to develop a love of learning and gain appropriate academic and social-emotional skills. Through a well-developed Virtual Academy, students will continue to meet their goal of being future ready.  We will ensure open lines of communication between teachers, students and parents. The level of rigor, workload, time commitment and timing of classes will be primary differences from the distance plan experienced in the Spring of 2020.

What is Edgenuity?

Edgenuity is a content management system that provides an online/digital learning curriculum for students who wish to learn in a fulltime virtual classroom setting.

HERE is an introductory video featuring MHS teacher, Mrs. K, that explains a bit more about Edgenuity and what you can expect.

Visit https://www.edgenuity.com/ for more information.

Tips For Edgenuity Success:

What are the requirements to be accepted to MVA?

What are the expectations of a MVA student?

What about grades/grading?

Virtual classes will follow the same grading structure set forth in the Mustang Public Schools Policy Guide and the MPS Student Handbook. “Actual Grade” in Edgenuity will reflect the student’s current grade.  This grade will be used for eligibility purposes and the final grade. "Relative Grade" will be given as the final grade at the end of the semester.

What about academic eligibility?

Scholastic eligibility for students will be checked at the end of the third week of a semester and each succeeding week thereafter.  If a student is not passing all subjects in which he/she is enrolled at the end of a week, he/she will be placed on probation during the next one-week period.

A student who has been placed on one-week probation must be passing all subjects at the end of the probationary week in order to retain eligibility.  If, after a one-week probationary period, a student is not passing, he/she will be ineligible to participate during the next one-week period.  The ineligibility period will begin on Monday, and end on Sunday.

Students will have until 4 p.m.Thursday to make-up or turn in work that could affect eligibility status. A final evaluation of the student’s grade will be made early Friday and reported to the parent and student on Friday. The information will also be made available to the secondary staff member responsible for eligibility reports so the information can be sent out to necessary teachers and coaches.  The information available on Friday morning to students, parents, teachers, and coaches will be final for the upcoming week's eligibility report.

What about student attendance?

Consistent participation in classes is essential to student success. Virtual attendance is measured in two ways: completion of lessons, projects, and assessments and time spent actively engaged in online lessons.  Students should login to each of their courses for substantive participation at least 5 times per week, preferably daily. To have satisfactory attendance, work should be submitted weekly unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher(s) in advance. Teacher(s) will contact students/parents by email and phone if they are not logging in frequently or making adequate progress in their courses. If, after the teacher contacts the student/parent, attendance and engagement do not improve, parents will be contacted by the teacher. A plan will be developed with the student and parent/guardian to help the student get back on track.  If the plan is unsuccessful, the student and parent will be asked to come in for a conference to discuss future success.

Students have access to Edgenuity which allows the student to work ahead and/or complete lessons from any location.  Therefore, if a student’s course completion rate is not on pace, and/or the student does not communicate with the teacher/s, the student may be considered truant.

If the student is enrolled in both online and traditional classes, the MPS attendance policy must be followed for the traditional classes.

If the student is unable to complete work virtually (ex. illness, out of town for a funeral, etc.) please contact the virtual teacher.

How do I apply for MVA?

Applications can be found under "Forms" in the parent portal.

*Application does not guarantee enrollment in the MVA Program.

How is this different from the Distance Learning in the Spring of 2020?

In March of 2020, the state Board of Education closed schools in Oklahoma due to the coronavirus pandemic and recommended a distance learning plan that allowed students to complete the school year at home. At that time, MPS developed a Distance Learning Plan (DLP) which included weekly lessons, GoogleClassroom meetings, and more.

MVA is not like our previously offered DLP. Instead, it offers a customized education, taught by certified teachers, that replaces the traditional, in-school learning environment for students who need this option.

The Virtual Academy has numerous differences from the Distance Learning that we experienced in the spring based on feedback received from parents, students and teachers. The Virtual Academy will look different based on the name and need of each student. In addition, students who receive supplemental services or are in different grades will find that their services are developmentally appropriate. Key aspects of the Virtual Academy include:

Can my child participate in athletics, fine arts or extracurricular activities?

MVA - No. Students in MVA will not attend campus and, as such, are not eligible for participation in on-campus activities.

7th/8th Virtual +OSSAA - Students that enroll in the Virtual + OSSAA program will participate in all classes virtually except for the courses; Band, Choir, Theatre's class Play Production, or after school Athletics, which will be taught at school in person. The Virtual + OSSAA is a minimum of a one semester commitment. Transportation is not provided, but will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian or student.

Mustang Blended (11-12 only) - Yes! Students may participate in extracurricular activities and/or clubs in Mustang Public Schools. For some activities, the student may need to be enrolled in a traditional class such as football or choir in order to participate in competitions or contests. Students also need to maintain eligibility according to OSSAA in order to participate in games or contests.

Additional Clarification:  Clubs/Activities would be options through Traditional or Blended, but MVA would preclude them as it is 100% off-campus.  Per OSSAA regulations, students must enroll in and attend at least one (1) period during a school day in order to be eligible for participation.  If a high school student wants to participate in these activities, they would just need to apply for Blended with the hour on campus/in-person being their sport/activity to be eligible to participate.

What about Prom, Graduation, Yearbook Pictures, etc.?

Prom, Graduation, etc. are experiences and being a student in MVA will only preclude participation in activities, Fine Arts, Athletics, clubs, etc., not experiences.

What about Advanced Placement (AP) Classes & MVA?

No, AP options will be not be available through MVA & Blended.

Is MVA self-paced? Can I work ahead?

The idea is that a student would be enrolled in 7 classes just as if they were in person. We are still working out the attendance codes/procedures and are awaiting guidance from the State. We hope to have those answers soon. Our current thinking is that Attendance will be based on completion of work, so the Learning Pathway could be completed on your schedule. Some meetings will be required virtually with teachers, though, and those will be scheduled likely during the school day.

Edgenuity will be the Content Management System for 7-12, but there will be Mustang staff supervising and administering the program. There likely won't be "live" classes (at least not the way Edgenuity is set up), but there will be classmates taking the same class.

Is this the same MVA that Mustang High School had prior to 2020?

No, the MVA is a District program that is 100% VirtualWhat MHS called MVA has been reworked/renamed, please contact the high school counselor for details on that program.

Do we buy school supplies if we are enrolled in MVA?

No, if enrolled in MVA, you would not be providing school supplies for the student (besides what is needed at home).  That said, MVA does require a device and internet, so those could be considered "supplies" in a loose sense of the word.

For Traditional & Blended - School supplies can be found here:  http://www.mustangps.org/SchoolSupplyLists.aspx

What are the device requirements for the device that families must provide?

The device just needs to be able to connect to the internet and have a web browser, as Edgenuity and Flexpoint are web-based CMS.

With these two programs, students will be charged with watching videos, typing responses to questions, dragging & dropping in virtual labs, etc.

Do MVA students have access to school counselors?

MPS Counselors are available to address student concerns and social emotional needs, provide access to community and school resources, answer questions regarding grades, monitor progress, and check transcripts.  Please contact your child's school counselor for help and information.  Counselor listing and support program details are available at http://www.mustangps.org/StudentAssistance.aspx

Do MVA students have access to school Libraries?

Mustang Public Schools has access to multiple resources including books online. In the event a student needs access to other materials at the site the Parent/student will need to contact their home school to make arrangements to check out the materials.

What about District/State mandated testing?

Students attending Mustang Virtual Academy or Blended Instruction will be required to participate in district and state mandated testing in accordance with Mustang Public Schools policies and Oklahoma State Department of Education guidelines.

What happens after I apply?

You will receive an email from Powerschool letting you know if you have been approved in grades 7-12.

K-6 will be notified by the district through email when a decision has been made.

For students/families who are new to Mustang, Central Enrollment will help with the next steps.

Updated Q&A

Does “virtual class” mean doing a zoom type class?

Students will be counted as present based on the completion of weekly assignments.

Edgenuity will be the Content Management System for 7-12, but there will be Mustang staff supervising and administering the program. There likely won't be "live" classes (at least not the way Edgenuity is set up), but there will be classmates taking the same class,

Do MVA students need to complete resident verification?

Yes, virtual students will complete the same resident verification online form as students attending school face to face.

Will MVA have the same daily schedule as if they were doing traditional school or they would login and work at their own pace?

Question:  Will students need to be logged in and do school work for 2 or 3 hrs a day or they will be logged in all day? Just trying to figure out if we do virtual, how long they will need to be logged in on a computer or laptop for internet data purposes.

Answer: Weekly lessons and assignments will be uploaded for students to complete at their own pace at any time. Live community time as well as intervention and enrichment sessions will also be available for students to attend. Each K-6th grade day includes a reading block, math instruction, a science and/or social studies lesson, and other electives such as an art lesson, or physical activity/education in addition to the community time.

What role will parents/family members play in a student’s online learning?

MVA will require support from caring adults at home and within the online classroom environment. Activities are designed to ensure that students continue learning at an appropriate pace as well as continue to develop a love of learning and gain appropriate academic and social-emotional skills. Adults will help students stay focused each day on the work assigned as well as ensuring assignments are turned in on a timely basis. We will ensure open lines of communication between teachers, students and parents.

When can I contact my child’s teacher with questions?

Teachers will be available to parents/students during regular school hours.

Will my students still receive their specials classes in the Mustang Virtual Academy?

Students will still experience 60 minutes of PE each week, per state law. Music and Art will be integrated into the content area for real world applications of learning.

How will students turn in their work?

All students will be expected to turn in their work via the online curriculum or the district learning management system (LMS). Teachers will communicate feedback with students via the LMS through various forms such as grades, written comments, phone calls, emails, and individual conferences along with information being in the online curriculum.

How will students receive grades?

The online curriculum will provide the grades for MVA students. Actual grade will be put in weekly and relative grade will be used at the end of each semester for the final grade.

Will textbooks be available for students attending MVA?

District provided curriculum resources including textbooks, workbooks, and other printed materials will be provided for all students attending MVA if needed. These curriculum resources will be picked up from the home school sites of the students at a coordinated time if needed.

Students on Campus:

Students who are participating in extracurricular activities or attending classes at school sites are expected to follow school rules and expectations. Students may not be in the building unsupervised. When students arrive on campus during the school day for classes or activities, they are to immediately report to the office and then to the appropriate location. Students who are participating in an activity outside of the school day should immediately report to the designated location on campus.

NCAA Information:

MPS teachers and the Edgenuity curriculum are NCAA approved. Upon enrollment, the student and/or parent must notify Mustang PS if they desire for their student to be NCAA eligible. There are specific requirements in terms of courses that need to be completed, testing requirements, and communication requirements that the student must adhere to in order to be eligible.
