In Michigan, an Educational Development Plan (EDP) is developed for every 7-12th grade student, and periodically revised throughout their secondary educational experience, reflecting individual student’s career interests and options. Elements of a high quality EDP can be found here: MDE's EDP Fundamentals Guide.
In our expansion efforts of career and college readiness countywide, the Muskegon Area Promise is now making it possible for the MAISD to secure Xello for K-2, Xello for 3-5 and Xello for 6-12. More than 40+ schools and 16,000 students will have the opportunity to use Xello for career awareness, exploration and preparation that is inclusive of college/life planning. Xello serves as our countywide Tier 1 support that universally works to meet many of the state expectations and targets within the Michigan Career Development Model (MiCDM). Our bold goal... Every student, future ready!
Bonus Note... The State now requires districts to share an electronic "informational packet" that includes post-graduation and career planning information with all students grades 8-12. The newly created Michigan Pathfinder Resources meet the content requirements of this informational packet and provides Michigan residents (and students) with state-specific education and occupation information so they can make informed education and career decisions. The easiest way to share this new mandated resource is via student emails, school messenger and you guessed it .... Xello!
This new Michigan Pathfinder Resources is currently available and accessible on the dashboard of every student’s Xello account countywide.
Xello is a nationally recognized college and career planning software (formerly Career Cruising) that helps students plan their own unique journey whether it involves a trade, college, university, entrepreneurship, or other training.
Every aspect of the program was built with the user in mind and optimized through extensive testing with students and educators. Along with in-depth assessments and a comprehensive database of careers, schools, and programs; Xello also includes built-in curriculum support via interactive lessons, course planning, and easy-to-use tools to help educators and administrators identify student pathways and make data-driven decisions about student’s career or college readiness.
A big step in preparing to launch career awareness, exploration and/or preparation for a new school year is to visually map out all of your district’s existing Career Development initiatives and programs; including Xello! A full-year map commonly called a "scope and sequence" will allow you to integrate our countywide Xello software into your district in a way that complements existing programs/activities and fills in potential gaps.
At each grade level, K-12, a mapped timeline of MAISD-recommended Xello activities that extend throughout the year has been created. These activities are in place to adhere to the MI Career Development Model and EDP expectations by the state. There are additional BLANK templates districts can use to map additional activities that are occurring above and beyond the minimum expectations. Combining the two is best practice and welcome.
