Students can earn high school and college credit at the same time. This opportunity allows students to get a jump start in college with little to no financial cost. Students may choose part-time or full-time courses on the college campus. State funding will pay for 30 Semester Hours/45 Quarter Hours of college credit.
Important: Please keep in mind students must provide their own method of transportation. Failing a college course can affect your ability to graduate from high school. Students are expected to adhere to college rules and expectations which require maturity.
Please see the desired college's website for instructions to apply to their dual enrollment program. No students may register for college classes without a prior meeting with your parent and the high school counselor. The deadline for students to contact the counselor at Shaw to schedule the dual enrollment meeting is May 3, 2024.
There are changes to Dual Enrollment. Please go to the GA Futures website and read the FAQ document so that you are aware of the latest information regarding dual enrollment from the state. One major change is the number of credit hours the state will fund. Students will only receive dual enrollment funding for up to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.
1. Read more about dual enrollment on the GA Futures website at GAFutures.org. Discuss your interest with your high school counselor to see if this is a good fit for you.
2. Determine which college you would like to attend and go to their website to see if you meet their criteria for admission. (see video links above)
a. Georgia Military College – quarter system
b. Columbus Technical College – semester system
c. Columbus State University – semester system
3. Follow the college’s instructions to apply as a dual enrollment student. Consider whether you are ready for this challenge both academically and socially.
4. Request that your transcript be sent to the college electronically through your GA Futures account. Go to GAFutures.org and look for High School Transcripts under the College Planning tab.
5. Email the counselor to schedule a conference to go over the dual enrollment expectations with you and your parent or guardian and complete the Participation Agreement form required before you can register for college classes. We will begin these meetings in March 2023, so February is a good time to submit your college application and get all of the necessary documents submitted.
6. Complete the dual enrollment funding application on GA Futures. This has a student portion and a parent portion.
7. Set up a meeting with your college advisor to schedule your classes at the college after you have met with your high school counselor to complete the participation agreement form.
8. Submit a copy of your college schedule to your high school counselor prior to the beginning of school.
Shaw counselors can only meet with and sign paperwork for students enrolled at Shaw High School.
We will begin meeting with parents and students for dual enrollment on. TBA
