At Shaw High School, a comprehensive process is in place to prepare students for successful career transitions. Students have access to co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities that align with their career goals, allowing them to gain valuable experience and skills. They also meet with counselors to discuss career and college planning, ensuring they receive guidance on post-secondary education, job readiness, and future opportunities. Throughout their journey, students are supported and recognized by staff, helping them stay motivated and prepared for success.
Our Public Safety pathway is designed to build career awareness, develop essential employability skills, and provide real-world experiences that prepare students for careers in law enforcement, emergency services, and related fields. The program follows a structured three-year progression:
Year 1: Introduction to Public Safety
Students explore various careers in public safety, including law enforcement, fire services, emergency medical response, and corrections.
Employability skills such as teamwork, communication, and professionalism are emphasized.
Guest speakers, career research projects, and basic certifications (e.g., CPR/First Aid) introduce students to industry expectations.
Year 2: Criminal Justice Essentials
Students dive deeper into law enforcement careers, learning about the criminal justice system, legal procedures, and public safety operations.
Hands-on activities, such as mock traffic stops and courtroom simulations, reinforce critical thinking and decision-making.
Resume writing, interview preparation, and interactions with local professionals enhance career readiness.
Year 3: Criminal Investigations
Students gain advanced skills in forensic science, crime scene analysis, and investigative procedures.
Participation in SkillsUSA competitions and field exercises helps refine practical skills.
Students receive guidance on post-secondary options, including college programs, technical training, and direct entry into the workforce. Job shadowing and internships may be available to provide real-world experience.
By the end of the pathway, students are well-equipped with both technical and employability skills, making them competitive candidates for further education and careers in public safety.
At Shaw High School, the counseling department ensures that every student receives individualized career counseling and has a clear plan for graduation. Counselors meet with students regularly to discuss career interests, post-secondary options, and graduation requirements. Through career assessments, college planning sessions, and one-on-one guidance, students are supported in making informed decisions about their futures.
A structured graduation plan is in place to track student progress, identify potential challenges, and provide necessary interventions. School administrators and teaching staff play an active role in this process by monitoring academic performance, offering mentorship, and collaborating with counselors to provide additional support when needed. Teachers integrate career readiness skills into coursework, ensuring students develop the knowledge and employability skills necessary for success beyond high school. Together, Shaw High School’s counseling team, administration, and faculty work to ensure that every student is prepared to graduate and transition into higher education or the workforce. Additional seat time options, such as Saturday school, are also offered to ensure student complete their journey to graduation.

At Shaw High School, the End of Pathway Assessment plays a vital role in our Career and Technical Education (CTAE) program, measuring students' skills and knowledge to ensure they are prepared for success in their chosen fields. As part of this process, the school administers the NOCTI Assessment, a nationally recognized exam that evaluates student proficiency and readiness within their respective pathways.
NOCTI Testing: Students enrolled in the Law and Public Safety pathway are required to complete the NOCTI Assessment, which evaluates their technical skills and knowledge. This exam ensures they are well-prepared for post-secondary education or entry into the workforce.
Outstanding Performance: Over the past three years, approximately 84 students have taken the NOCTI exam, achieving an impressive 95% passing rate. Last year marked a milestone with our first-ever 100% passing rate, showcasing the strength of Shaw High School’s curriculum and the effectiveness of its instructional methods in preparing students for career success.
Shaw High School offers a Work-Based Learning (WBL) Program that provides students with real-world experiences to develop employability and technical skills essential for career and postsecondary success. Through a structured partnership between education and industry, students engage in hands-on learning that connects classroom instruction with practical workplace applications.
The WBL program allows students to explore career pathways, gain valuable job experience, and build the skills needed for a smooth transition into the workforce or higher education. Students participate in career awareness, exploration, and training activities that enhance their readiness for future opportunities. The program culminates in an assessment of acquired knowledge and skills, ensuring that students are well-prepared and recognized for their achievements.
