Several years ago, a Murray State University nursing faculty member became interested in National Geographic research, led by National Geographic fellow Dan Buettner, about areas of the world found to have a greater population of centenarians (dubbed Blue Zones). After investigating this topic and the demographic research of Pes and Poulain, she led education abroad programs to two of the identified Blue Zones, introducing students and other faculty to the concepts associated with healthy lifestyles in these areas. Currently, a group of university faculty from nursing, exercise science, nutrition, psychology, and occupational safety have been working on a four-part research project that investigates healthy lifestyles of centenarians in the world's Blue Zones. The project's overall aim is to educate people about centenarian lifestyles and compare and contrast with habits of Americans. The group has developed this website as a resource for community members. They have administered a community survey to determine barriers to healthy living in their rural area and plan to interview local elderly people to identify their health habits. Eventually, the group plans on taking their research into the local elementary schools to teach students about their findings.
