Readers will pay attention to the details of nonfiction books. Reader will ask questions about new information, identify what the book is trying to teach or the learning objective, and connect information from more than one book on the same non-fiction topic. Across this unit, second graders are becoming familiar with characters across a series. We dive into series exploration and discuss how characters and plots may remain predictable across a series of books. We are learning all about character traits and how our characters respond to events! We talked about what we see versus what we learn through actions. Our characters have outside and inside character traits.
Across this unit, readers build fluency to assist with the comprehension of longer texts by rehearsing reading voices, scooping up words into phrases, noticing dialogue tags, using meaning to read fluently, and reading at a just right pace. Readers identify and interpret figurative language skills to aid in comprehension skills by recognizing literary languge, understanding comparisons, noticing when authors play with words, and reading as writers - focusing on special language. Readers build strategies to keep track of longer stories by setting up routines for same book partners, holding on to stories even when books are long, staying on track when books get tricky, and using writing to solve reading problems. Readers set goals and support one another in reaching their goals by self-assessing and setting goals, organizing goal clubs, and giving feedback to group members.
