Intervention & Referral Services

What is I&RS?

Intervention and Referral Services (I&RS) is a primary way in which we support teachers' and students' needs in the general education environment. I&RS is not intended to replace traditional methods or resources for helping students to function effectively in school. Its primary focus is to utilize resources and expertise within the school community to help children be successful.

The I&RS Process:

The process is a collaborative effort between school personnel and families targeting identified needs for students who are exhibiting academic concerns, behavioral/emotional concerns and/or health related concerns.  Once these barriers have been identified, individualized interventions are determined, implemented and documented in an I&RS action plan or a 504 Accommodation Plan if appropriate.  

The I&RS Team:

The I&RS/504 team meets regularly throughout the school year to discuss ways to support student growth and success—academically, emotionally, and socially. Members of this team typically include the school counselors, an administrator, parents, the student's teacher, and any other support applicable for the student. 

I&RS Initial Request for I&RS Meeting:

A student may be referred to I&RS if they are experiencing academic, emotional, and/or behavioral difficulties. An initial request for an I&RS meeting can be initiated by the classroom teacher, the counselor, other subject area teachers, or the parent. The request for an I&RS Meeting can be submitted in writing.
