SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING WITH MS. HUELBIG

LESSON 1: MEET YOUR COUNSELOR

In this lesson, students get to know Ms. Huelbig and are reminded of the role of the school counselor. For students who are new to Orchard Hill, this may be an initial introduction to school counseling! We read the book Mrs. Joyce Gives the Best High Fives, then played Pin the Role on the Counselor. Finally, the each class came to take a museum tour of Ms. Huelbig's office.

LESSON 2: ZONES OF REGULATION

In this lesson, we learned to tune into our bodies in order to identify  body sensations and the emotions those sensations might be tied to. We learned that emotions can be grouped into zones depending on the sensations we feel and the amount of energy we feel in our bodies. When we learn to identify our zone, we can better understand what strategies we can use to help us regulate our feelings. Click here to learn more about the Zones of Regulation!

LESSON 3: EMPATHY

In this lesson we discussed empathy and how we can use our empathy to treat others with compassion. We read the book A Little Spot of Empathy by Diane Alber and talked about how sometimes people wear disguises to mask how they’re really feeling inside. When we take the time to try to understand how someone is really feeling, we are best able to treat them with empathy and compassion and to be a great friend. We finished our lesson by listening to songs about empathy, kindness, and friendship, and by creating empathy turkeys where we identified different ways we can each show empathy.
