Birthdays
Birthdays are celebrating as close to the actual day as possible. For Summer birthdays we will celebrate in May or June. One-two weeks before the birthday, I'll ask your child how he/she would like to celebrate.
NO FOOD is allowed at birthday or holiday celebrations at OHES. Everyone chooses a present from the Box of Wonder and a pencil. We will make a special book of cards for the birthday child. Please NO goody bags - our room parents will welcome them as favors for our 4 parties.
Birthday Celebration Choices - Choose 1
Choose a favorite song on CD to have a mini-dance party. Song must be have appropriate lyrics for school. You can choose your favorite dance video from www.GoNoodle.com or Just Dance from YouTube
Have 15 minutes of extra recess indoors or outdoors (weather permitting)
Play a special game for 10 minutes at the end of the school day in honor of the birthday. It can be a favorite morning meeting game we’ve played, a game played in first grade or one the child teaches us. (ideas include Hangman, 7-Up, Charades, Pictionary, etc.)
The “Birthday Book Club” celebrates our growing literacy and encourages parent involvement as well as honors the birthday. You and your child can select a favorite book from home or purchase a new age-appropriate book to bring into school on the child’s birthday. A family member can come in to read the book for 10-15 minutes (if it is a chapter book, pick the first couple chapters, not the whole story). We will be flexible with your work schedule. OR The child can read the book to the class. If the child cannot read the book him/herself and you are unable to attend, I can read the book. After reading, the entire class will autograph the book. It will stay in our classroom library in a special section to be re-read by students throughout the school year. At the end of the school year, each child will bring home his or her "birthday book" to keep. It is a wonderful keepsake!
Instead of a book, parents are welcome to come in to do a special craft for 10-15 minutes with the class. We have basic supplies (glue, scissors, etc) but check with me first if you need any other special materials.
Choose a guided drawing to do together from Art Hub or another online source.
Choose the Mystery Doug for us to watch
Have a special share and tell/show us anything you want (karate demonstration, science project, Pet Share, play the piano, etc.)
I'm willing to entertain other 10-15 min ideas...
