Our Middle School Math Program
The 6th grade math class is the enriched level class:
This class coupled with the 7th grade enriched math class covers middle school mathematics standards needed for algebra in 2 years instead of 3.
Students receive support and enrichment opportunities to meet their instructional needs.
Students who need support are provided with extra help, focused strategy mini-lessons, etc. to help them be successful in the class. All students participate in engaging math enrichment opportunities.
Students who master the material more quickly are provided with meaningful enrichment opportunities to strengthen their math problem-solving abilities and provide them with engaging mathematical challenges.
This class leads students to either Algebra 1 or Honors Algebra 1 during 8th grade.
This is the high school class.
This is an acceleration of 1 year in math.
Students interested in taking Honors Algebra 1 in 8th grade should work hard in 6th and 7th grade to be ready for the experience.
Students who are successful in Honors Algebra 1 in 8th grade typically have had a trend of MAP Math scores of 85% or higher in 6th and 7th grade.
Parents will be able to choose the level of Algebra they feel is appropriate for their young person.
All students will have access to higher level mathematics classes in high school because of the path we provide for them beginning in middle school.
Double Accelerated Math
Double Accelerated Math is a program intended for the most highly talented math students.
The curriculum for the class in 6th grade Double Accelerated Math covers all middle school math standards—far beyond what is taught in the 6th grade enriched math class.
The Double Accelerated Math class in 6th grade covers 3 years of math standards in 1 year!
Why Double Accelerated Math?
To provide our most highly talented and dedicated math students with appropriate challenge in mathematics.
These students typically have a trend of scores (i.e. multiple and recent scores) at the 95th percentile or higher on the math portion of the MAP test or on other tests that allow students to demonstrate mastery of above-grade level standards.
They have also scored in the Advanced level on the Wisconsin Forward exam, and
They have had a strong score on the district placement test.
Students who are most successful in this program have the above-described profile of data.
This program is for students whose learning rate is much faster than even highly talented math students.
These students are those who master material at a high level after 1 teaching-learning opportunity.
Double accelerated math students need 1, rarely 2, teaching-learning opportunities.
Highly talented students need 2-4 opportunities.
More average students need 6-8 opportunities.
What Are the Math Pathways My Child Could Follow?
With effort, all students have the opportunity to reach an AP Calculus class by the end of high school. The Enriched 6th Grade Math can lead to AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC during the senior year--that is one or two semesters of college calculus taken during high school.
