The Mequon-Thiensville School District is dedicated to providing students with the highest quality programming in all curricular areas. After considerable study, the district decided to provide mathematics programming beginning in 6th grade that can lead any interested student to a course in calculus prior to graduating from Homestead. Study of higher level mathematics in high school has been correlated positively with college success, and our district felt it was vital to provide this opportunity for all students.
Below you will see the possible pathways that students might follow beginning in 6th grade. Please note that beginning in 6th Grade Enriched Math is entering into a single accelerated math pathway. The Double Accelerated Math Program is for those relatively few students whose learning needs and readiness demonstrate that they need the rigor of a more radical acceleration in mathematics, beginning by studying all of middle school mathematics in 6th grade.
Very few school districts provide a Double Accelerated Math experience like MTSD does. Our program culminates in Multivariable Calculus. Most other districts' math programs culminate in AP Calculus BC, as does our single accelerated option. Colleges across the nation, even the most prestigious universities, see AP Calculus BC as excellent qualification for admission even for prospective science, engineering and math majors.
If you have questions, please feel free to contact your middle school math specialist or your Secondary TAG Coordinator.
