Honors and AP Courses are open to all interested Homestead students. It is not necessary to be identified for TAG to take advantage of the rich array of Honors, AP and Dual Enrollment courses. Except for math, students may opt into and out of the honors and AP courses in a department, e.g. English, social studies, and may enter the honors/AP pathway after freshman year if they choose to do so.
Honors Courses
Honors courses are designed by Homestead educators to provide a more in-depth, rigorous and often faster paced educational experience for students beyond our already rigorous regular college prep courses.
AP (Advanced Placement)
AP courses offer the student college level curriculum designed to be taught at the high school level. The curriculum for each course follows what is outlined by the College Board. Students who wish to take the AP test for the course(s) they take are encouraged to do so. The tests are given during the first two weeks of May and require the students to have pre-registered and paid for the tests. Qualifying scores on the test may give the student the opportunity to gain placement or college credit, depending upon the college they attend. Passing scores on the AP tests range from 3 to 5. More selective colleges may require a score of 4 or 5 to award credit/placement and some colleges evaluate the student's test themselves to determine if credit should be awarded. Regardless of potential credit or placement at the college the student attends, taking an AP course not only provides access to more rigorous course content but also helps to prepare students for the rigors of college level work.
