Fourth Year Practicum
Grade four Orff Ensemble practicing for their performance!
My goal for my fourth year practicum practicum is to engage in more professional learning, and volunteer opportunities, in the school community (PR 2). I want to get out of my comfort zone, and volunteer to be an active member of the school community.
Strategy
In order to achieve my my goal, I will be reaching out to different teachers in the school to help out with clubs that they run. I have already talked to the music teacher about helping out with the Orff ensemble, so I am excited to participate in this!
Growth
Every Tuesday throughout my practicum I assisted with the four Orff music ensemble. Volunteering with this club allowed me to be an active member of the school community, and allowed me to connect with students who weren't just in my specific classroom. Through my volunteering I got to experience some of the responsibilities of teachers that extend from just teaching academics. I even edited the music for the Orff ensemble, and got to connect some of my own passions and skills to this!
Third Year Practicum
Teaching my students some Ukrainian dance steps! I grew up dancing, so this allowed me to share my culture with them, and learn about their cultures.
In my practicum I want to work to collect a variety of resources that will best serve the diverse needs of my students. This will allow me to serve my students to the best of my ability, and use what I have learned in my future teaching practice (PR 5).
Strategy
In order to achieve my goal I will first work closely with my Mentor Teacher to learn about each student, and get to know some of her strategies for supporting each student. Part A of the ICP assignment will also help me to develop a support plan for each student.
Growth
Talking with my Mentor Teacher, and completing ICP Part A really helped me to anticipate the unique needs of each individual student in my classroom. I found having a support plan for each student to be super helpful when lesson planning/differentiating my lessons, and I found that being aware of student cultural backgrounds helped students engage in the learning that we were doing. My Mentor Teacher supported me, and provided me with/we found a variety of resources to support my work with the different cultural backgrounds in my class.
Future Goal
My goal for my next practicum is to engage in more professional learning, and volunteer opportunities, in the school community (PR 2). I want to get out of my comfort zone, and volunteer to be an active member of the school community.
Fall & Winter 2022/2023
At the ATA Student Local Conference with other EUS executives! This shows how I am "establish[ing] professional and ethical relationships" (PR 9).
Creating supportive professional relationships can help reduce teacher burnout - this artifact is from a presentation I had in EDUC 2201 about HEARTcare planning.
An aspect of my practice that I would like to work on going forward is establishing professional relationships with other teachers in my field experience school. I believe that I have connected with professors and students at Mount Royal, but I would like to create more relationships with individuals in an actual school.
Strategy
One way that I can achieve my goal is by eating my lunch in the staff room where other teachers are. I usually like to keep to myself, so opening up to professional conversations will be a good push for me. My Mentor Teacher has also set up for me to briefly visit the other classrooms in my school, so this will also be a good opportunity for me to connect with others.
Growth
This semester I found a lot of success in the goal I set. It was definitely out of my comfort zone to go and sit in the staff room, but I found that I was able to build professional relationships through this. Getting the chance to discuss the teaching profession and gain insight from multiple people was great! Throughout the semester I was also able to visit multiple different classrooms, and I got to see a lot of different effective teaching strategies!
Winter 2022 - EDUC 1233
A post I made for the EUS Instagram!
My certificate for being a classroom representative.
A goal that I have for myself as I move in to my second year of the Bachelor of Education program is to create more opportunities for myself to connect with others. More specifically I would like to foster such relationships by becoming an EUS executive member, or at the very least attend more EUS events in person.
Strategy
This year I was an EUS classroom representative and I would like to become more involved. I will achieve this goal by running to be an EUS executive, specifically social media manager and treasurer, as this will allow me to connect with my peers and create professional relationships.
Growth
Overall I think that I was successfully able to achieve my goal that I set around creating opportunities to connect with others. This year I am the Treasurer of the Education Undergraduate Society and I have already learned so much about professional communication and relationships. In September 2022 I got to attend an ATA conference with other student locals and saw the importance of relationship building!
Fall 2021 - EDUC 1231
Workshops are a valuable way to enhance one's professional knowledge.
An overview of teaching as a profession.
Something that I would like to work on in terms of my own professional responsibilities as a teacher, is striving to grow my knowledge of First Nation, Metis, and Inuit people in Canada. I will specifically work on creating a connection with at least one Elder or Indigenous knowledge keeper in the upcoming Winter semester and will strive to gain a deeper understanding of how to best support my Indigenous students.
Strategy
In order to reach my goal, I will make an effort to create professional connections and relationships with the people in the Iniskim centre at Mount Royal University. I will also attend more workshops, and create professional relationships with the facilitators, in order to further understand my future students.
Growth
In the Winter 2022 semester I made an effort to connect with the coordinator at the Iniskim centre and I learned more about the programs that the centre offers. I look forward to furthering my growth in this area.
