It is important for teachers to demonstrate professional responsibility, through both the relationships they have with their colleagues and with different members of the school community (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). Teachers must also strive to improve their teaching practice by reviewing the personal and legal obligations they have to their students, province, school board, and professional association (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). A teacher should also be knowledgeable about how historical, sociological, philosophical, and political factors will impact their students in today's world (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020).
Teachers must use their knowledge of how social factors impact education, as well as their understanding of how people learn and develop, to create effective learning goals and plans (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). In planning for learning, effective teachers will draw on programs of study and a variety of resources to contribute to the diverse learning goals of their students, especially in regards to incorporating Indigenous knowledge (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). It is also important that teachers use their professional knowledge as they plan, to ensure that they create lessons that are accessible and engaging for diverse groups of learners (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020).
In order to facilitate meaningful student learning, teachers must be aware of the strengths of different pedagogical approaches and incorporate a variety of strategies into their work, effectively using resources and, where applicable, technologies (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). Teachers must also communicate their knowledge and expectations to their students in a clear manner that encourages engagement (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). When planning, the pacing of a lesson plan is important so that students have ample time to reflect on, and engage with, the material (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020).
A sound understanding of the "theoretical and historical" (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020) aspects of assessment practices is required by teachers. It is important to provide appropriate feedback to students so that they know how they can be engaged in their learning (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). Assessment resources that are relevant and varied must be used in order to meet learner needs and curricular outcomes (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). Having a supported rationale behind why a certain assessment was made is important to have, in order to properly reflect on the information with students, parents, and peers (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020).
Teachers should strive to ensure that every member of their classroom feels supported, safe, and respected (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). It is important to take into account how factors such as a student's background, culture, gender identity, and cognitive ability will affect their school experience (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020). As a teacher, one is responsible for creating an inclusive environment through effective planning, relationship building, modelling of behaviour, and, when needed, engaging specialized service providers (Alberta Education, 2018 & Mount Royal University, 2020).
