Fourth Year Practicum
Above is an example of a math talk that I would do with students (credit to @masteryinprimary on Instagram). It was SO interesting to do these daily with students, and to see the various different ways that they approached the task.
Looking ahead to my next practicum, I would really like to learn/practice some more ways to use numeracy pedagogies in my lessons (PFL 4). I am very confident with using literacy pedagogies, but I want to push myself to improve my confidence with numeracy.
Strategy
To achieve this goal I will work closely with mentor teacher to learn about the different strategies that she uses when she plans her math lessons, I also want to do my own research to find some of the ways that I can plan for effective mathematics lessons. Being able to take on 100% of the teaching will really help me to become more confident in this area.
Growth
Being able to teach 100% of the addition unit to my grade one students really helped me to grow in my understanding of mathematics pedagogies! One key tool that was very useful in my teaching was the use of math talks and esti-mysteries to engage students in my math lessons, and to get them thinking deeply about mathematics!
Third Year Practicum
This lesson about the fur trade I created multiple ways for students to take up the activity. Some students had all pictures, some had a mix of pictures and words, and some students wrote what each picture represented as an extension.
During my practicum I want to work hard to create lessons that my students can take up in multiple different ways. I want there to be multiple paths of learning for different students (PFL 7).
Strategy
To achieve this goal I want to consult with my Mentor Teacher to get an idea of what she does to plan for multiple paths of learning. I want to explore how I can ensure that each learner gets the most out of what I am teaching, and will consult the UDL Guidelines for additional assistance.
Growth
Planning for multiple paths of learning was a bigger challenge for me than I originally thought it would be! It took me a bit of time to really understand which differentiation strategies would work best for my students, but eventually figuring out what worked best was so rewarding! This experience taught me that taking the time to meaningfully differentiate my lessons is an essential (sometimes time consuming) process.
Future Goal
Looking ahead to my next practicum, I would really like to learn/practice some more ways to use numeracy pedagogies in my lessons (PFL 4). I am very confident with using literacy pedagogies, but I want to push myself to improve my confidence with numeracy.
Fall & Winter 2022/2023
My Children's Literature Log is a great place to start thinking of lesson ideas. I plan to use this book from my Children's Literature Log to inspire my lesson.
These are KUSP's from the grade 4 program of studies that I can use for planning my lesson! This artifact shows how I can "use programs of study to set learning goals" (PL 1).
My goal for the Winter 2023 semester is to plan and teach at least one lesson around poetry that is properly scaffolded for students. As a student I was always able to let my creativity shine through poetry and I want to do this for my students.
Strategy
To achieve this goal I plan to discuss with my Mentor Teacher how I should begin to go about this and see if she has any ideas. I will also do my own research about teaching poetry to students, and I am sure I will learn about it in EDUC 2103.
Growth
This semester I had the opportunity to teach a poetry lesson to my students! By communicating with my Mentor Teacher, and doing my own research, I got to practice how to effectively scaffold my lesson. Going forward I would really like to keep practicing scaffolding my lessons, and this will start with using backwards design.
Winter 2022 - EDUC 1233
Alberta Program of Studies for English Language Arts.
My goal for Fall 2022 is to gain a better understanding of how to create long range plans for learning. I would like to create a plan that would be suitable for the students in my field work class and focus on literacy.
Strategy
In order to achieve this goal I will reflect on the Alberta Program of Studies and work closely with my mentor teacher. I also plan to do my own research on how to create long range lesson plans.
Growth
I did not meet my goal from Winter 2022, but I do think that I gained a deeper understanding of the English Language Arts program of studies. I was also able to refine my lesson planning process so that hopefully it will be easier for me to create multiple plans in the future.
Fall 2021 - EDUC 1231
The following artifacts show the teacher planning multiple paths of learning with the same activity, so that students of different levels would all be successful. These images show the manifestation of this planning.
My goal for the Winter semester is to create a lesson plan to teach to the grade 6 students in my fieldwork. More specifically, I would like to review the curriculum and learning outcomes for grade six physical education to come up with a lesson plan to fit into their dance unit. This lesson plan should be one that allows for students to have some choice over what they are doing.
Strategy
I will achieve this goal by working with my mentor teacher to more deeply understand where each student is at in terms of their physical ability. I will also work to construct a lesson plan with dance steps that students can use to make a dance sequence while working in small groups.
Growth
In the Winter 2022 semester I was able to create a lesson plan in which my students created a dance sequence and I felt that it went very successfully. I even exceeded my goal by creating the grade 6 dance unit, with the help of my mentor teacher, and I scaffolded the outcomes to match the students' physical abilities.
