A large sum of individuals believe a classroom is a second home. The environment within classrooms must be welcoming, respectful, and promote equality. Promotion of equality includes but is not limited too, ethnicity, learning styles, religion, and more. An inclusive environment promotes positive behaviour and an overall support system for all involved.
Goal for Winter Semester 2026: For my final practicum in Winter 2026, my goal is to be more educated on the resources available within my future school regarding differentiation, inclusivity, etc. During my Fall 2024 practicum, I was aware of the resources but there unfortunately were not many due to being slightly understaffed. This meant that I had to really work with my mentor teacher and find strategies that I can use on my own without support. I am very interested in seeing what it would b like to have additional resources/support.
Relevancy: Supporting students and all personnel within a school is extremely important. Knowing the resources that are available allows for the best support possible for everyone.
How I will accomplish this: This goal will be accomplished through discussions, observations, and research. When I receive my practicum placement, I will discuss with my mentor teacher what resources they have available and if they use any of them. I will also ensure that I look into those resources and use them when applicable. I will continue to use the strategies that I have found alongside of the new ones.
Growth: This goal went well! From the first day, I made it very clear to my mentor teacher and other staff (ie. principal, education assistants) that I wanted to be educated on what resources I have available for different scenarios such as differentiation purposes, behavioural concern, and more. I had a wide range of people showing and explaining the various resources I have as well as how to know when to use them. By making this a clear goal from the first day, I was immediately able to better support my students needs through using things such as breakout spaces, technology, educational assistants, and more. I was also able to maintain effective classroom management as I learnt what I have available to me at all times but also the "chain of command". What I mean by "chain of command" is that I learnt when something is within my control and when I must escalate it to bring in another person whether that is another teacher or the principal.
Artifact: I am unable to share photos for this due to privacy reasons. For this goal, the other teacher candidates and I requested a meeting early on in our practicum. We requested that she review the various resources that the school has both within the school and out of it (ie. online, PD days, etc.). By doing this, us teacher candidates were aware of the resources we had available very early on which helped us to be successful during our 100% teaching period.
Goal for Fall semester 2024: My new goal for this area is to learn how to tailor to the different learning needs of my students. I have come to learn that there are many different styles of learners, I want to ensure that I am fully educated on what works best in regards to teaching and the overall classroom environment for these students.
How I will accomplish this: I will begin by having a discussion with my mentor teacher about the students within the classroom. Through this discussion I hope to learn about the various styles of learners that are within my current practicum and how I can better support them. For example if a student is a visual learner, I will ensure that all of my lessons have visuals, such as assignment examples.
Relevance: Every student learns differently. As a future educator I believe that it is crucial to understand the different learning styles so that I know how to best support my students so that they are provided with fair opportunities to excel within school.
Time Frame: Ideally, I will learn about the various learning styles present within my practicum classroom before my five week teaching block. By doing this, by the time that I am taking on more of a teaching role from November to December, my lessons will contain aspects that are suited to all styles of learners.
Growth: This goal went well! I find that creating an inclusive environment is something that comes naturally but does also require knowledge/research regarding the supports/resources available and knowing your students likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, and more. Within my classroom, right from the beginning I established relationships with all of my students. I took this information and created my classroom support plan. This plan helped me to support my students as best as I could as well as create trusting and positive relationships with them.
My goal for winter semester 2024: I want to learn about the different tools and resources utilized within the classroom that are there to support students who require extra help and foster higher levels of comfort. This may be things such as technology, aid, etc.
How I will accomplish this goal: I will begin by documenting the various resources present within my current field placement classroom. I will talk to my mentor teacher to ensure I did not miss any crucial resources. I will then do my own personal research on these resources. I want to know how they are supplied, why they are supplied, and how they are beneficial to those using them. Once this research is complete I will summarize it for my own reference and if any questions arise, I will ask my mentor teacher or one of my education professors.
Reflection of Achievement/Progress: This goal was a high area of focus throughout the entire year. This was due to the high number of students within the class that required differentiated instruction. I had noted all technology that was readily available within the class which consisted of three ipads and one class computer. Additionally, my mentor teacher had explained the resources that she posts on the walls of the classroom. These resources included number charts, word banks, sentence starters, multiplication tables, and so much more. My mentor teacher had explained that she prefers to post these resources on the wall so that everyone may access them at any time, not just the students who are typically considered for requiring extra support. This is something that I would like to carry into my own future classroom as the students constantly utilized them and it limited the amount of questions that were asked every lesson.
Artifacts: Below are some of the resources my mentor had posted around the classroom for all students to reference, not just those who are considered for differentiated instruction.
Goal for fall semester 2023: My new goal for this competency is to focus on a more culturally inclusive environment. Through my first field placement I was able to view the way my mentor teacher ensured every culture was respected and how she promoted equality. I saw things such as the celebration of black history month and children's books available to the students that were pertinent to different cultures. I would like to learn about how I can ensure I promote each culture equally. Whether that be through lessons, answering questions, or resources that are provided in the classroom (i.e. books).
How I will accomplish this: This will be accomplished through learning about the different cultures present within my field placement. Once I have a basic understanding of the cultures, I will implement them in the classroom by bringing in different books or planning lessons surrounding them (with permission from my mentor teacher). My ultimate goal is to honour cultural diversity and promote an intercultural understanding within the classroom (Alberta TQS 1.f.).
Reflection of Achievement/Progress: Within my field placement there was a student that did not speak nor read english. This posed a challenge for the delivery of lessons. We explained to other students that this particular student may need to copy certain aspects of their work, mainly writing prompts. Every student loved to help with this. In certain cases my mentor teacher or I would write prompts for this student to copy as well. My mentor teacher and I also learnt basic phrases in the students first language so when asking something we didn't always have to use google translate. Although this is not directly fostering a more culturally inclusive environment, it helped this student to feel included in all lessons as well as taught the other students how to support those who do not understand. This student would copy other students writing prompts (with permission) as well as write in their first language.
Growth/Progress: As I progressed through this semester, I was able to witness a wide variety of learning styles within my field placement classroom. Each time I witnessed a new one, I ensures I not only researched it, but had a discussion with my mentor teacher as well. I was able to gain a basic understanding of different learning styles (i.e. auditory and visual) and how a lesson may be taught in order to ensure every style understands. There is still a lot I can learn when it comes to the different learning styles. I understand the basic idea of different learning styles but I am still unsure of how I can plan my lessons to ensure they encompass each one. This is something I would like to improve on as I progress through my schooling.

My goal for this competency is to understand the different learning styles present within the classroom.
I will discuss the different learning types present within the classroom with my mentor teacher.
I will deepen my understanding of the different learning styles by finding two sources from the MRU library that breakdown the different styles.
Similar to my goal under the assessment competency, I will monitor my success of this goal based by my knowledge. Ideally, I will be able to list the different styles and describe each one at least at a basic level.
