The goal that I created for my practicum placement in terms of developing my professional responsibilities was to mindfully engage in any and all professional learning opportunities within my placement school. Also, that PL goal extended to my learning in my university classes. Throughout this practicum and engagement in my university courses, I believe that I achieved my goal! When opportunities came up to engage in professional learning, I mindfully engaged. For example, working alongside my mentor teacher and other specialists in my placement school, I took on "Building Thinking Classrooms". Below, I have included a few photos to document how I created a "Thinking Classroom" in my practicum placement through problem-solving activities, providing unsolvable riddles, and providing erasable whiteboard spaces!
In the future, I hope to continue developing my understanding of Thinking Classrooms and how to engage them in my classroom!
The goal that I created for my practicum placement in terms of developing my professional responsibilities was to "[collaborate] with teachers, students, parents/guardians, [and the] local community as partners in education to support student learning" (TQS 1c, 1d, 1e). This continues to be an area of growth for me. When starting my practicum placement, I had to pivot in order to participate as my original placement was changed. This pivoting caused many ripple effects in my practicum. Thus, I did not get to achieve this goal to the extent that I wanted. I plan to continue this goal in my future practicum and teaching career. Although not achieving a goal completely is disappointing, I want to use this opportunity to remember that I am a lifelong learner and I will continue to grow professionally much after my graduation date and even years and years into my teaching practice. And even though this goal was not completed, I do believe that I have grown professionally.
Based on this practicum experience, I want to challenge myself to be more intentional with communication. For example, in my next practicum placement as well as my future teaching practice, I want to communicate with parents/guardians through emails, meetings, or even my Teacher Twitter (@MsGosselin). As well, I want to plan to integrate the local community into my lessons and classroom through meaningful partnerships and communication!
To demonstrate my professional growth, I have attached a presentation about my personal strengths and areas of growth from my practicum 1 placement.
As a required assignment of the EDUC 2321: "Education and Individual Development" course. I reflected on my own personal goals as a learner and educator. At the beginning of the winter 2021 semester, I created a goal to learn as much as possible about diversity within a classroom so that I can best support my future students. Halfway through the semester, I realized that this goal needed to be readjusted to fit my current life and schedule. At the end of the semester, I reflected upon the goal, my responsibilities, and the importance of such goals. I believe that this assignment has demonstrated how I plan to "establish professional and ethical relationships" according to the MRU B.Ed Program of Studies outcomes. As well, I believe that I have begun to understand the importance of the Teaching Quality Standard related to engaging in career-long professional learning which states that teachers need to be constantly "building capacity to support student success in inclusive, welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments" and "seeking, critically reviewing and applying educational research to improve practice" (TQS 2a-f).
Due to COVID-19 complications, the field experience with EDUC 2371 was recreated as the 'Professions Conversations Project'. The project consisted of five calls with a mentor teacher in the field where the teacher candidate(s) would ask questions and have in-depth conversations about a variety of topics.
Personally, I feel as though this project was a great opportunity to reach out to other people in the practice to "engage in professional learning with colleagues" and collaborate with people of different perspectives to learn how to "create and deliver an effective lesson plan.". As well, I feel as though collaborating with others such as my mentor teacher and my teacher candidate partner was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about professionalism.
