The goal that I created in terms of planning for learning for this final practicum placement was to be mindful to ensure I have hands-on activities. To do this, I wanted to plan for group work, parallel tasks, and hands-on learning opportunities. Since my practicum has now ended, I believe that I have achieved this goal. Throughout the practicum, I did not just plan for learning, I believe that I designed meaningful experiences for students. Planning is just what I will be teaching and when. Designing is so much more. I designed learning that brought the curriculum to life through hands-on activities, group work, and parallel tasks!
To demonstrate my achievement of this goal, I have included some of the learning designed for the Flight science unit. Initially, science was one of those subjects that I was not confident in teaching. However, through designing for learning in engaging ways, I feel very confident in my abilities.
The goal that I created in terms of planning for learning for my practicum placement was to "[translate] outcomes into coherent short, medium, and long-range plans" throughout my fall semester courses (TQS 3a). To achieve this goal, I planned to implement the backwards design model into each of my lesson plans. I believe that I did achieve this goal but I have to pivot my plan in order to achieve this. The backwards design model is extremely valuable in creating lesson plans, however, I found that only implementing this model was not enough to satisfy this goal. To further achieve this goal, I made a point of attempting to teach the short, medium, and long-range plans that I came up with for my Integrated Curriculum Project. This project was a requirement for the fall 2021 semester. After completing this project, I then taught 5 lessons from my unit plan thus reaching my goal!
Based on this practicum experience, I want to challenge myself to create more integrated unit plans that I will use in my future practicum as well as my teaching practice. Integration is something that I believe can make the learning experiences more meaningful and in-depth for students, and so, I want to make a point to plan for more integration of all subject areas!
The Integrated Curriculum Project is attached below. As well, I have attached a presentation that I created to showcase my Integrated Curriculum Project. (TQS 3a-c, 4b, 4d, 4g).
During the EDUC 4351 course titled "Indigenous Perspectives", I created an integrative unit plan for grade 4 that was centred around incorporating Indigenous Perspectives. For this unit, my "seed" was a fantastic children's book called "The Water Walker" by by Joanna Robertson. As a part of this unit plan, I was mindful to ensure that this resource and other resources were authentic and ethical Indigenous resources! (TQS 5a-d).
During the EDUC 2200 course titled "Understanding Curriculum through Indigenous Ways of Living with the Land", I collaborated with fellow Teacher Candidates to create a unit plan for grades 3 & 4 centred around the sacred world heritage site Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. As a part of this unit plan, we were mindful to ensure that the lessons, assessments, and resources were authentic to the experience and ethical integration of Indigenous Perspectives! (TQS 2a-f, 5a-d).
The following lesson plan was created during the Teaching ELA course I participated in during my second year of the education program. This lesson plan was created with the intention of being taught to grade 2 students but unfortunately, due to COVID-19, I have been unable to present this lesson plan to peers and/or students. I have also included the recording form, rubric, and Google Slide presentation made to go with this lesson plan. In terms of the Teaching Quality Standards, through this assignment, I believe I was able to "use the program of studies to create goals" for my students and “plan for multiple paths to learning for individuals and groups of learners" (TQS 3a, 3b).
