"A Spoonful of Sugar and a Cup of Love!"
My philosophy, "a spoonful of sugar and a cup of love", alludes to the movie "Mary Poppins". A spoonful of sugar does help the medicine go down, but instead of medicine, it is education. To students, sugar is magical- it gets them energized and excited!
Throughout my educational career as a student, I've been blessed with some phenomenal teachers. On the other hand, I've also had my fair share of negative experiences. Kids can tell when a teacher isn't passionate about their careers. Many students, even teachers, have experienced an unfortunate encounter that has ruined the image of the educational system. Oftentimes, a lot of students begin to resent their educators and lose motivation to engage in enriching experiences. When this occurs, students shut down and refuse to learn. They develop negative attitudes towards the school community and rule out any opportunities to grow.
The foundation of effective instruction is love and genuine care. Without these students will close their hearts and their minds. Students need a community and an environment where they can feel safe and comfortable with being vulnerable. That is why student-teacher relationships are essential for students to open up as learners. In turn, will become successful because they trust your teachings and understand that it is for the betterment of their development.
My teaching philosophy aligns most with Progressivism, as I want to focus more on the students, rather than just the discipline being taught. As teachers, it is our responsibility, to ensure that our students remain engaged. It is important to add a bit of sugar to each of my lessons to ensure that students are putting their best foot forward. Promoting in-class engagement can be done by incorporating students' interests. Therefore, it is important to take the time to get to know each and every one of your students.
