Competency Development: Translates outcomes into coherent short, medium and long range plans (TQS 3a)
Goal During Practicum: During my practicum, one of my goals is to effectively plan for learning in multiple ways that are effective for my practice. In order to reach this goal, I will work alongside my Mentor Teacher to receive feedback on my methods of planning. This goal is important to me as it will keep me organized throughout my teaching career. Having different ways of planning that I feel comfortable with will increase the quality in my lessons and how they are delivered to the students.
Growth: During practicum, I attempted several different methods for planning. After experimenting, I found a route that worked best to keep myself organized and ensure I was connecting all of my lessons to Alberta’s Program of Studies.
Competency Development: Plans for multiple paths to learning for individuals and groups of learners (MRU B.Ed. Program Outcomes, PFL 8, TQS 3a).
Goal During Practicum: In my practicum, because we teach two different grade 7 classes science and math, differentiation is critical for these classes to succeed. Looking from a larger scale, classes A and B have very different dynamics and learning styles. My goal this semester is to ensure that my lessons give students several different routes that they can choose to take to best fit their learning style. I will do this by continuously having students partake in formative assessments to see student progress and in which ways they are succeeding. Knowing where students are in their learning will help me differentiate lessons to the needs of certain individuals, groups, and classes.
Students are doing a scavenger hunt to find different types of forces and draw an image.
Growth: During this practicum, I decided to take some risks in the way that I was going to be planning for my learning. There were several instances where I would have my students take notes in science, but I felt a lack of engagement, therefore I tried to find a different way to take notes in a ways that were more involved.
This happened on several occasions in both math and science. I felt that my instruction was repetitive and needed some more variety in it. In math, I surprised my students with some different activities on certain days instead of doing our typical drill and practice.
Some of the ways that I included multiple ways of learning included: the use of Kahoots, virtual escape rooms, EdPuzzle, Bingo Games, scavenger hunts, etc. My purpose behind changing up my teaching was to keep my students engaged and involved in their own learning processes.
Growth: This lesson plan made me more comfortable with creating lessons and knowing what kinds of differentiation is needed. This assignment helped me to think outside the box and pushed me to “plan for multiple paths to learning for individuals and groups of learners” (PL8). Creating lesson plans for writing also helped me to look at several different aspects of writing that students need to learn and what effective ways there are to teach students these components of writing.
Goals: My goals are to create lesson plans that are even more engaging and involve more creativity in them.
Growth: The reading log assignment is going to be a phenomenal resource for me when looking for different pieces of literature at different grade levels. This reading log helped me to “use programs of study to set learning goals" (PL2) and assess different texts of how and when they could be used in a classroom. There are several subjects that these books can be related to and this showed me how to assess books based on grade level, subject (ex. finding a book appropriate for a science lesson), and lesson ideas to go along with the books.
Goals: My goal is to continue to expand my reading log and add more books with various grade levels and subjects to create an even better resource for myself in the future.
Growth: This semester I learned a lot more about the work that goes into planning a lesson. There is so much detail and so many things to consider, like creating separate plans and adjusting things for certain students. I feel more comfortable in planning lessons and making sure there is a hook and an outro of the lesson so that students can be intrigued and recall the information learned. I enjoyed learning about how to make the best lesson plan and how there are so many different kinds of ways to facilitate learning.
I have attatched my lesson plan assignment that I was able to teach to the students. Apart from this, I read several morning stories to my students, worked in small groups, and helped around the classroom as much as I could.
Before coming into this program, I knew the time and effort that went into planning lessons because of my past experience working in a preschool. Lots of detail and pre-planning/preparation goes into making a successful lesson. Though I have not done a lesson on my own, my mentor teacher puts a lot of effort in her lesson plans and modifies it for certain students with different needs.
