Competency Development: Creates multiple and varied assessment tools that align with outcomes (TQS 3c).
Goals for Practicum: During my final practicum, it is my responsibility to create assessment tools that are effective for students. My goal for this practicum is to include a variety of assessments that involve student interests. During assessments, I will include sections for student reflection to better understand where students are in their learning and understanding.
Growth: During our watercolour art unit, I gave students multiple opportunities to self-reflect on their own work using visuals (happy, meh, and sad faces). I also did several formative assessments such as having students show me a 5 finger rating scale when learning new concepts in math.
Competency Development: Uses varied and relevant assessments to identify learner needs and adjust instruction. Include varied ways of addressing misunderstandings (MRU B.Ed. Outcomes A2, TQS 3c).
Goal for Practicum: I have learned the importance of assessment in the classroom for student success. In my practicum this semester, I want to learn a wide variety of ways of formative assessment to understand my students' knowledge, comfort levels, and how I need to facilitate learning. My goal for this semester is to incorporate different ways of assessing learning. For summative assessment, my goal is to include an interactive project of learning to evaluate my students.
Growth: During my practicum, I used several kinds of formative assessments throughout the units in math and science. I often had students showing me their thumbs in math to express how confident they felt about the new topics that were taught.
Another formative assessment that I used frequently was for students to show me their understanding by writing or drawing and answer on their desks to a question that I have posed. The image on the right shows an example of this kind of assessment. Students were learning about force diagrams in science. I first guided them through what they mean and how to do them. Then, I asked students to choose an image to do by themselves. They were to draw their diagram on their desk to show me. This was an example of an "I do, we do, you do" activity which showed a lot of success.
Growth: The assessment dossier assignment helped me combine my knowledge of assessment theory with application, “as well as principles of assessment appropriate for different purposes” (A1). I was able to learn about different kinds of assessments used in the classroom, and the use of effectively asssessing students on their work. The dossier also showed me the benefits for specific types of assessments and forced me to do research on why to do certain assessments and what kind of benefit they have for students.
Goals: My goal is to learn about more ways I can use formative assessment to successfully benefit my students in helping them grow in their learning.
Growth: This semester I learned about different kinds of assessments that are possible in ELA. In my lesson plan, I used a rubric to assess student writing and comprehension of a task given from a read-aloud. Another assessment that I practiced was producing running records while a student reads aloud to me to grasp what level they would be at (pictured to the right).
Goals: I want to incorporate more assessments in my classroom that aren't nerve-wracking to students, and assessments that students feel confident in completing.
Growth: This semester I have learned about the different kinds of assessments. I learned that assessments are not just giving students tests, but assessments should be happening often, or every day. During my lesson, I my way of assessing my students was by them showing their work and creating their own graphs after we formulated and created a graph as a class.
Goals: A goal that I have over the next few years is to bring more ways of assessment into my classroom. I want to learn what the best way of assessing my own students is and what is the best way to formulate tests and small quizzes. I know that students get anxiety around the word "test", and I want to learn how to ease their anxiety.
Growth: I have gotten the opportunity to see the different ways to assess student. There is "assessment for learning" and "assessment of learning". Assessment for learning is assessing students to see their progress and teachers are able to give feedback on what can be improved for the next time. Assessment of learning is a test given at the end of a period of material that students learn. It is more test based to see if students are meeting the standards of the curriculum. I have seen both of these methods used in the classroom I am in and believe that they both can be beneficial.
Goals: My goal is to incorporate assessments for learning and assessments of learning to allow students to get feedback and perform better, as well as know how well they are doing. I think it is important for students to be able to know how they can improve and give them the opportunity to do so.
