What a School Counselor Is:
A certified, trained, and licensed educator who helps all students in the areas of academic achievement, career development, and social/emotional growth.
A student advocate who works to remove barriers to learning and promote equity and access to education.
A data-informed professional who designs and delivers a comprehensive school counseling program.
A collaborator who works with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community members to support student success.
A provider of short-term, solution-focused counseling and referrals to outside mental health services when needed.
A disciplinarian or administrator
A long-term therapist or provider of intensive mental health treatment
A test coordinator or primarily responsible for administrative duties
A classroom substitute or someone assigned non-counseling tasks that take them away from student-focused services
A gatekeeper — school counselors are meant to support all students, not only those in crisis or at risk
