GOAL: Increase student achievement in the higher bands in reading in years 7-12
TARGET: 40% increase in the number of students (7-10) achieving in the high bands in PAT R and a 30% increase of students in Yr11/12 achieving an A grade
CHALLENGE OF PRACTICE If learning areas collaboratively develop focus on structuring lessons for instructional reading, and resources across the school that allow for differentiation, then we will see more students moving into the high bands in reading
ACTION:
Teachers will use Learning Area specific texts to explicitly develop vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension using close reading approaches/strategies.
ACTION:
Teachers in each Learning Area develop resources that include cognitive reading strategies such as inferring, summarising, searching-selecting, and visualising-organising.
ACTION:
Teachers will develop student skills in annotating, analysing and discussing texts, including orally.
All students read for 10 minutes at the start of every lesson
All teachers participate in Rosie Kerin Forensic Reading PD Sessions
All teachers implement one 20 minute explicit reading task per week (based on Rosie Kerin's PD) exposing students to a variety of texts - speech/ fiction/ newspaper, explicit cognitive reading strategies. Students to keep a portfolio (portfolio 2023 goal)
Vocabulary lists created for all units, Tier 2 and Tier 3 language. Available on all Task Sheets, Google Slide, and in classrooms (laminated word walls) 10 minute vocab activity/ game in every lesson.
Roster created for teachers to present to the team during faculty meeting- what strategies are you using, how did you implement them, what was the outcome?
Connect classes to take responsibility for creating a resource to display/ use in the connect class and initiate the use of ‘Red’ and “Blue” reading boxes, build this into lesson pedagogy
Goal Increase high band numeracy achievement by implementing differentiated teaching, worked examples, collaborative learning and metacognitive strategies.
To improve students' capacity to effectively incorporate, interpret and explain statistics/ data within their writing, to strengthen arguments and improve modality and persuasion.
Create a universal Google Slide explicitly teaching “logos” how to teach students to use data as a persuasive technique. Teach students vocab that links to data ie 15% is the minority.
Allocate one team member per year level to update the task sheet to include numeracy focus
Allocate one team member per year level to create a pre-test question that reflects the assessment task
Administer pre-test
Explicitly teach ‘logos’ through universal Google Slide
The assessment task acts as post-test
Individual teachers to collate and present data
