Scholarships are very competitive. Ninety-five percent of all scholarships use combinations of the following criteria. Successful candidates have at least three or more of these criteria:
Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) - You will be required to list your cumulative GPA on most all scholarships. That's why it is so important that you work hard at maintaining your grades throughout high school. It is one of the reasons that your parents and guidance counselors stress the importance of working towards maintaining your best grades.
School Involvement - Scholarship applications ask you to list the school activities you have been involved with by grade level. The more involvement you have the more weight your application is given. Sports, school clubs, student government, drama, extracurricular band, etc. are all considered school involvement. Be involved in extra-curricular activities. Check out this link to what is available at MBHS!!!
Community Involvement - Students that can list significant community involvement will have advantages over students that can't. Community involvement generally includes volunteer work that you have done within your community. You may volunteer through your church, library, or service organizations. Mount Baker High School Students can sign up with the Whatcom Volunteer Center to locate volunteer opportunities.
Leadership Activities - Many scholarship applications want to know what leadership positions you have held by grade level. This may include leadership positions within sports, student government, school or community clubs, church groups, etc.
The Mount Baker High School hosts a scholarship database that lists local scholarships for Mount Baker High School students only, Whatcom County students, and other random regional and national scholarships for which students may be eligible.
