The following products demonstrate my literacy teaching style in both individual and group settings as well as both in-person and online through distance learning.
These students receive individual instruction because they are 1st graders who are below grade level in reading but do not qualify for Special Education services. I was trained in Reading Recovery and that experience has given me great insight not only into teaching students to read and write in their native language, but also with how to reach students whose second language is English. These skills have influenced my second language instruction as well, providing strategies that can be used with any language learner!
This literacy activity shows the importance of language structure, repetition, and hands-on experiences for young learners. After a conversation, students compose a story, write it, and then build the sentence again out of jumbled word cards.
Students in my elementary school in grades K and 2-4 also receive interventions if they are reading below grade level but do not qualify for Special Education services. I was trained in Leveled Literacy Intervention which is meant for small group instruction. This type of instruction has provided me with skills that can be used with any language learner.
This video is an example of providing small group instruction via distance learning. Students would access this video on Google Classroom and could comment there and find links to submit videos of themselves reading their text for my review and planning.
