Here you can see video of my classroom instruction. Please take note of classroom management techniques including: rejoinders, redirection, proximity, and positive reinforcement, to name a few. Also note L2 acquisition techniques including: modified speech patterns, repetition, recasting, and leveled questioning, to name a few.
Once students are capable of reading and understanding on their own (Novice High proficiency and above) students spend the first 5 to 10 minutes of class reading a Spanish book or article of their choice.
I share what I read for the 5 minutes, students share in small group and can share with the whole class if they decide. This discussion hits on cultural and linguistic knowledge.
While reading class novels, students perform as I narrate the reading. This not only makes novels come alive, and engage learners but gives an opportunity for my fast processors to show their skills while slower processes get more meaning based input.
This is an example of the many different strategies to turn a simple reading into a fun, engaging game for students with a little bit of competition. For this particular activity, students are put into groups of two to three at similar skill levels. Students are provided a cloze reading with or without a word bank. In this particular example they were provided a summary of a their class novel, but it can also be a reading they are not familiar with, depending and the level of difficulty you want for the activity. All students have a copy of the reading but their is only one die and one writing utensil. One student is reading and filling in the answers of the cloze activity while another student is rolling the die, trying to get a six. Once they do, they take the pencil and begin filling in the reading while the third student rolls the die. The first student in the group to correctly fill in all answers wins.
