When assessing students' progress in language proficiency it is important that all aspects of language are accounted for - both receptive (reading and listening) and productive (writing and speaking) skills as well as students' ability to overcome misunderstandings and their process for negotiating meaning. Students progress towards proficiency at individual rates and therefor the assigning of grades can result in unique challenges. In the provided documents this is discussed at length as well as a critique of one one language tool that is especially important in assessing language proficiency - the AAPPL.
The provided paper discusses methods in which to assess the various modes of communication and how to assign a grade for students' progress.
This writing rubric focuses on students writing fluency and effectiveness of communication without unfairly weighing grammatical accuracy.
