Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language: The same sound can hold entirely different meanings depending on the tone used to pronounce it, a fundamental difference from how intonation is used in English. The Tone Perfect is Spoken by six native Mandarin speakers (three female and three male), the collection is comprised of 9,860 audio files (6 sets of 1,640).

This is a simple tool designed to help students of Mandarin Chinese learn the thousands of characters (hànzì) of the Chinese writing system. To use it, simply copy passages from the web into the text box, and they will be annotated with hànyǔ pīnyīn or zhùyīn pronunciation symbols. The zipu follow traditional Chinese etymologies based mainly on the "small seal" characters that were standardized about 2,200 years ago in the Qin Dynasty. Modern researchers have obtained a better understanding of the earlier evolution of characters before they were standardized, but the traditional etymologies are more useful for students and remain the standard reference point for all subsequent research.

The website was launched by linguist Simon Ager in 1998, originally intended to be a web design and translation service. As Ager collected and added more information about languages and various writing systems, the project evolved into an encyclopedia.
