German in Use

Märchen

This practice in utilizing a corpus will serve partially as scaffolding for students build upon their understanding and familiarity with the preterite tense. Students will be able - through the text and Voyant Tools - to identify some of the more commonly used preterite forms (e.g. sah, sprach, ging) which will allow them more speedy reading and comprehension in the future.

In addition, a second objective is to build a sense of confidence in students regarding German literature. The sentences are often long and wordy, and looking at authentic texts can be intimidating to students on the cusp of developing true literacy. By finding these texts, I hope to introduce to them something that is relatively easy to grasp, semi-familiar, and with words they mostly either know or can derive from context.
