In my classroom, I teach using Communicative Language Teaching methods focusing on Comprehensible Input. Students are encouraged not to learn the language but to acquire it in a more natural way by listening and engaging with the language. Input strategies include Storytelling and Total Physical Response in Storytelling, Movie and Picture Talks, and Free Voluntary Reading in levels 1-2. In levels 3-4 and Heritage/Native speakers courses, input is focused on novel units and reading along with authentic movies, videos, and music.
I believe that proficiency can be achieved naturally through various methods of input. I encourage students to take an active role in their learning and students are assessed on what they can do with the language. Student achievements are tracked through ACTFL's proficiency guidelines.
I believe that engaging students starts with being engaged yourself. I like to use funny, ridiculous or outrageous materials in class to keep students engaged. I also use authentic materials such as music.
Grammar and vocabulary are not the primary focus in my classroom. Vocabulary is introduced in the form of input with a focus on target structures, such as the Super Seven and Sweet Sixteen verbs. I use implicit instruction for grammar instruction by exposing students to a variety of inputs.
In the past, I taught culture as knowledge about different countries, focusing on holidays and celebrations. Now I understand that intercultural awareness is an approach to exposing students to the world around them and raising awareness of not only other cultures but how different perspectives affect culture.
