Twenty First Century Learning and Me
October 4, 2020
As an educator, I struggle with how to prepare students for the real world, engage students in meaningful content, and how to collaborate with others. Year after year, I realize that I focus the most on the engagement piece.Through my Master’s course in educational technology, I have realized that if I want to see change, I need to promote a classroom that supports 21st century learning.
21st century learning allows for learning to be student-centered. Students have the opportunity to control their own learning path(Huntsman School of Business, 2020). Students are empowered by choice as it allows for more learning in the classroom. Through student centered learning, students exemplify the 4C’s(communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking) which are learning skills that are incorporated into the classroom.
Another aspect of 21st century learning is technology. Technology substitutes tools that carry similar functions (Buddhai & Taddei, 2015). With this in mind, teachers are mindful of the tools they pick because of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge(TPACK). TPACK combines three knowledges (content, pedagogy, and technology) into one which allows for student success in the 21st century (Koehler & Mishra, 2005). Technology will not be the only aspect that brings my classroom 21st century learning.
As a teacher, I want to ensure that my students have the most success by adapting to a 21st century classroom. Students deserve to have a classroom where it is innovative, has choice, and prepares students for the real world. To adapt to an innovative 21st century classroom, I will reach out to my Professional Learning Network to learn and find resources to innovate my classroom. This may mean participating in a Twitter chat or reaching out to my colleagues. 21st century learning allows my students and I to grow as individual learners.
