Overview 

Australopithecus bahrelghazali is an early hominid discovered in Chad, being the first Australopithecus found west of the Rift Valley. The type specimen for the species is a lower jaw fragment, KT-12/H1 named Abel, dated to approximately 3.6 million years old with beryllium-based radiometric dating.
