Purpose
Two of these controllable flow valves will be used to connect the air compressor and fuel source to the pulse jet engine. It will be used to vary the flow of the air fuel mixture and to figure out the equivalence ratio and mass flow rate needed for the pulse jet to operate for self-sustaining combustion. Automating the valves can reduce the tasks needed to operate the pulse jet.
Components
The controllable flow valve is comprised of a servo motor, ball valve, and 3D printed parts from MSU https://www.library.msstate.edu/dmc/spaces/makerspace.
Specs Servo
The servo motor requires 7 Volts and an input signal. Black is ground, Red is 7 Volts, and White is the input signal. The Servo contains a strong aluminum gear, iron core motor, and a cnc aluminum middle shell. 270-degree servo.
Specs Ball Valve
The ball valve's connection type is FNPT x FNPT and is Full port ball valve. The ball valve is made of brass C46500 and it can handle a maximum pressure of 150 psi. 0 to 90 degrees of control.
The 3D printed Servo Valve weighs 0.5 lbs. It can be mounted to the Test Stand using 2 bolts that are an inch apart.
Comments
There is a defect in the ball valve where its axis is misaligned with the octagonal fitting of the 3D printed octagonal mount. This can be aligned by creating another 3D octagonal that is rotated to be aligned with the ball valve. There is a gap in the 3D printed shaft adapter to the servo shaft. The functionality is not hindered by any of these defects. The friction to twist the ball valve increases over long periods of inactivity. The friction within the ball valve can be returned to normal by spraying the inside of the ball valve with DW-40 and or repeated twists of the shaft. All of the grounds of the circuit have to be connected in order to avoid servo jittering.
