College Application Process Information
September 2024:
Remind your student to meet with their School Counselor to discuss post-graduation goals and develop a plan of action.
Attend the MSHS College Application Night (Grade 12) @ MSHS Media Center (Date and Time TBA)
Applying to 4-year universities:
Check with your student to make sure they obtained at least two teacher letters of recommendation to support their college applications > Teacher Letter of Recommendation Request Form.
Check with your student to ensure they submitted the online School Counselor Letter of Recommendation Request Form Google Form.
Discuss and review the application essay(s) with your student prior to submitting the application(s). Encourage your student to have the essay(s) reviewed by their English teacher, as well.
October 2024:
Remind your student to attend the RCBC Spring Ahead Program Information Session @ MSHS Auditorium (if applying to RCBC).
Complete and submit the 2025/2026 FAFSA financial aid form. Make sure to select all colleges your student is applying to so that the student aid summary will be sent to the financial aid office at each institution.
Both parent(s) and student need to create their own FAFSA FSA ID so that the form signature can be submitted electronically.
Create a HESAA account. Approximately two weeks following the submission of the FAFSA form, students will be able to create a HESAA account and connect it with the FAFSA. The FAFSA form needs to be processed prior to the HESAA connection.
Check your student's FAFSA and HESAA accounts often for updates, to-do list, and reports.
The FAFSA form must be submitted each year a student is in college and the HESAA needs to be updated, as well.
December 2024:
Remind your student to submit the MSHS General Scholarship Form application (Google Form).
Winter 2025:
Attend the MSHS Financial Aid Night ~ 6:30 pm @ MSHS Media Center. - Senior Students and Families (Date and Time TBA)
May 1, 2025:
National College Decision Day
Yearlong Reminders:
Visit the MSHS College and Career Planning website for valuable information and resources.
Student applying to RCBC or another Community College? >> Visit the MSHS RCBC/Community College website.
Remind your student to keep in contact with their School Counselor throughout the entire college application process and to attend all meetings.
Remind your student to check their school email on a daily basis for important reminders, scholarship opportunities, announcements, deadlines, and invitations to meet with their School Counselor.
Keep informed of your student's progress with applications while paying close attention to deadlines. Many applications require a fee and must be paid to submit the application.
Students are encouraged to meet with their School Counselor prior to submitting applications.
Encourage your student to utilize their Naviance account to explore colleges, careers, and personality traits.
Remind your student to update their Naviance account throughout the college application process.
Encourage your student to apply for scholarships. Students will be emailed additional scholarship opportunities throughout the school year from Student Services.
Remind your student to notify their School Counselor of college acceptance decisions as received throughout the application process.
Reach out to your student's School Counselor with any questions or concerns.
