Math
Our district has adopted Envision math curriculum. We will cover many topics such as regrouping, time, money, fractions, 2-D shapes, 3-D solids, and measurement. We will also explore arrays and repeated addition, which are the beginning foundations of multiplication.
Math Facts
Your child is expected to know the basic addition and subtraction facts by the end of the year. Having flashcards at home/school will help your child succeed. In second grade, the goal is to retrieve the answers quicker to help with lengthier computation problems. We will be adding and subtracting up to 1000 this year!
Related Facts
Since your child will be working with such large numbers, number sense is key. The first thing to know is what two numbers add up to 10, 2 and 8, 5 and 5, 4 and 6, etc. If your child knows those, then he/she will soon understand that 20 and 80 make 100, 50 and 50, 40 and 60, etc. And soon after, know that 200 and 800 make 1000, 500 and 500, and 400 and 600. They will understand the concept of related facts.
