Action Based Learning

Action Based Learning Lab- MPE

Action Based Learning 101

The WHAT…

· The ABL program is based on brain research that strongly supports the link of movement to increased academic performance.

· The ABL “physical curriculum” includes a series of progressions and stations, each designed to prepare the brain for input and processing.

The WHY…

· A child’s mental development is based in part on his/her early motor development.

· Brain pathways (wiring) are created as a child learns to move in different ways—and these pathways are later needed to process information successfully.

· The ABL curriculum is designed to fill in missing stages of development and/or to practice needed components necessary for learning success.

· These skills benefit every child, no matter their developmental level.

The HOW…

· There are 6 fixed stations within the ABL room, our “body work” stations.

· These stations progress through 10 levels, or progressions, throughout the school year, many times one activity builds to the next

· Previously taught academic content, including ELA, Math and Science content, is layered on to the physical activities, (the “brain work”.) For example, students might toss and catch the answer to a math problem.

· In ABL we’re learning the importance of being active and healthy! Students are practicing current academic content in a fun way, while building independence, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership skills!
