PTO meetings

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a group of amazing parents and staff who work together to plan school-wide events and fund-raising opportunities, with funds directly supporting classrooms! We will have our kick-off meeting on Monday, September 21st 4:00-5:00 p.m.! We will look at what organizing activities in a virtual space looks like, and make commitments about how we will support the family/school connection throughout the year! Please RSVP in ParentSquare and you will receive the link!

ELAC/Town Hall Meeting

The English Learning Advisory Council (ELAC) meets to give the parents of English Learners (students who are bilingual) a forum to give input about school goals, importance of attendance, and programs for English Learners. Teachers also lead parent workshops. This year, these meetings will also begin with a Town Hall forum for parents to ask Mr. Sampson questions. ALL parents are invited! Our first meeting is Tuesday, September 29th 4:00-5:00 p.m. Please RSVP in ParentSquare, and you will receive the link!

Learning A-Z and i-Ready

Students have two systems that they can use asynchronously when students are not in class. All students should try to use these systems every week! Both are found in students' Clever accounts.

Learning A-Z has many engaging books that are at each student's reading level. Students should always 1) Listen to the recording of the book, 2) Read the book aloud, recording themselves read, and then 3) Read the book a 3rd time. Then, 4) take the quiz. Students earn stars they can use to build avatars or even donate their stars to UNICEF to feed families! Expectations for books to read per week:

  • Levels A-L: 5

  • Levels M-Z: 2

Students watched this video to learn more about Learning A-Z. You can watch it too below!

Students should plan to use the student path ("My path") lessons in i-Ready for Reading and Math every week, at least 45 minutes per week per subject.

I will be monitoring students' usage. Students who meet their usage targets for both Learning A-Z and i-Ready will be entered into weekly raffles to win prizes, which will be delivered to their homes! Below is another way to look at the expectations for i-Ready and Learning A-Z usage:

Running Records Assessments

All 1st-5th grade students will take a quick 15 minute reading assessment sometime in the next 2 weeks. They will login to Learning A-Z and read a passage and record themselves reading it. They will then record themselves retelling the important information from the passage. Finally, they will take a little quiz. Please do not help your child during the assessment, as it helps the teachers determine instructional needs of your child. Some children will take the assessment a few times, and some will only take it once. This is not used for grades!

Counseling Website

Please check out the news Ord Terrace Counseling website here! It has lots of resources available, including opportunities for students to participate in equine therapy with horses, as well as other types of services from Mrs. Ulwelling, our therapist, and Mrs. Massey, our psychologist!
