This session will discuss how guided play experiences enhance children’s learning. Taking a guided play approach in the classroom has been shown to be more effective at supporting children's academic outcomes than a direct instruction approach alone. It involves opportunities for children to initiate their own activities with ample time to explore what they are learning supported by intentional and strategic interactions with adults. This session will explore a guided play approach and provide insights on how to develop classroom environments for play that embed academic and whole child learning objectives. Participants will gain insights in how to stage the classroom environment, provide targeted materials, and interact with children with intention as they play.
