Academics
The curriculum at Missouri Valley is comprehensive and includes courses of study for college bound students as well as for students planning to enter technical colleges, military, or employment. Honors courses are available on site. College credit is available through Iowa Western Community College via concurrent enrollment.

Graduation Requirements
Students must successfully complete the courses required by the Board of Iowa Department of Education in order to graduate. Graduation requirements can be found within the student handbook located on our District's website.

Grading System
Missouri Valley High School utilizes a 4.0 grading scale and does not weight classes. We also use a "+" and "-" system. The following table outlines the grading scale and values assigned to each letter grade when determining GPA. Percentage values are not rounded when determining a letter grade.

Extracurricular Activities
ART CLUB - Ms. Ellithorpe
The Art Club gets involved in many school and community activities. For example, members paint murals at the school and also participate in fundraisers for purchasing new equipment used by the art students. Members also put together projects to submit to the Western Iowa Conference Art Show as well as attend field trips to various art events.
DRAMA & THESPIANS - Mr. Wright
The MVHS Drama Department produces two plays per year, one in the fall, and one in the spring. Any student in grades 9-12 is eligible to audition. MVHS has been affiliated with the International Thespian Society since 1967. Our local troupe number is 359. The ITS is an organization honoring excellence in educational theatre. In order to become eligible for membership, a student must have worked on at least two productions, and earned a minimum of 10 points. Points can be earned by either working backstage, or performing.
FCCLA - Mrs. Sturgill
FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. FCCLA is a dynamic national student organization whose central focus is the family. Chapter projects focus on a variety of youth concerns and issues affecting teens and their families today. FCCLA is open to any student 9-12who has taken or is currently enrolled in a Family & Consumer Science class. The Missouri Valley chapter has competed in STAR Event competitions on the district, state, and national level, raised awareness about distracted driving, along with various other community service projects. As a member you will have opportunities to meet new people, travel, and improve leadership skills.
FBLA - Mrs. Kohl
FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America. FBLA members help run the school store (MoJoe’s Café & Market), complete service projects and hold fundraisers. Members will also have the opportunity to prepare projects for the FBLA state competition. Possible future items: present business related items to elementary and middle school students and tour businesses.
HOSA - Mrs. Brinker
HOSA: Future Health Professionals is a group of students who are enrolled in the health science courses and participate in a variety of health and medical related activities. They participate in job shadowing with healthcare professionals and attend leadership conferences to network with other students across the state and learn more about HOSA and the health care field. Various fundraisers are provided throughout the year in order to raise money for activities. HOSA students also organize and/or participate in a variety of service projects throughout the year.
KEY CLUB - Mrs. Kohl
The high school division of Kiwanis International Key Club has been a service club since the fall of 1959. Key Club takes part in a wide variety of local and national projects every year. One of the major service projects is collecting food items for the Harrison County Food Pantry around Thanksgiving time as well as providing a Thanksgiving meal to families in need in Missouri Valley. Other projects include: trick-or-treat bags for elementary students, Veteran’s Day signs, making Valentine boxes with preschoolers and “kiss a senior goodbye” kisses.
MATH CLUB - Mr. Wright & Mrs. Malone
This organization helps with Homecoming and also organizes activities for PI-Day in March as well as holding ACT math reviews.
FFA - Ms. Strope
FFA is the student-led organization for students enrolled in agriculture courses. The primary goal of the FFA is to make a positive difference in the lives of its members by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. There are many different types of conferences and competitions available for FFA members to participate in.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - Ms. Campin
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Earning induction into the Missouri Valley NHS is one of the highest academic honors a student can achieve. Students will be considered as juniors and seniors and must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and exhibit all four pillars (Scholarship, Leadership, Character, Service) of the NHS. NHS members strive to set a positive example and are involved in many community and school outreach activities to serve others.
CHESS CLUB - Mr. Arrieta
Missouri Valley Chess Club seeks to provide high school and middle school students the opportunity to be involved in a year-round extracurricular activity that focuses on building a community around the game of chess. Currently we hold game nights (1 x a semester) where students can get together, have fun, and play different board games. In the future we would like to set up chess sessions at various senior living facilities or a chess camp at the elementary. The MV Chess Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in the high school media center.
QUIZ BOWL - Mrs. Jerred
Quiz Bowl is a competition based club in which members work as a team and go head-to-head against other schools in trivia-based, Jeopardy-style tournaments throughout the school year. We are interested in creating teams with diverse knowledge bases so are looking for all types of students to come out and compete if you like trivia! Even if you don’t feel like an “expert” you never know what questions will be asked and how you can lend some knowledge to the team score
SCIENCE CLUB - Mrs. Hack & Mrs. Reisz
Science Club is involved with a number of activities with the main one being the paper recycling for the district. Money from fundraising events is used for the annual overnight zoo trip. The overnight zoo trip is a popular event in which clubbers receive an after hours tour of the zoo, a sleep over with the penguins, sharks, or sea creatures, and before-hours morning hike. Science Club also partners with Desoto Bend for their annual volunteer day.
SHOW CHOIR - Mrs. Goodrich
Show Choir is a musical ensemble that combines choral singing with choreographed dance. The group rehearses 3 times a week and prepares for various competitions and concerts throughout the year. One must be in concert choir in order to be in show choir. Show Choir also organizes and performs at a dinner show in the spring.
SPEECH - Mr. Hansen & Mrs. Goodrich
Speech is an extracurricular activity where students prepare for a wide variety of performances, from dramatic performances like acting and interpretive reading, to original student-written presentations such as original oratory, expository, and even some events which do not require writing OR memorizing, like radio news or improv. There is a category in speech for everyone! Individual scheduling is somewhat flexible. Performances that receive a Division I rating at Districts advance on to state, and superb state performances are selected for All-State.
STUDENT COUNCIL - Mrs. Brinker & Mrs. Reisz
The purpose of Student Council is to promote a positive school climate/culture for both students and staff. Our main goal is to host activities/events that provide students an opportunity to get involved in the school and community in a positive way. Student Council is an opportunity for students to develop skills in leadership as well as event planning!
