The Senior Year Plus program provides students with the opportunity to earn college credit while they are still in high school through Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) . Students may choose to attend courses online, in person at an IWCC campus location or enroll in college level electives at the MVHS campus.
The following information is abbreviated from the Senior Year Plus Policy that is currently outlined within the Student Handbook. You are encouraged to read the handbook section in its entirety.
Eligibility
Students must demonstrate proficiency in reading, math, and science on their most recent Iowa Assessments. Students who have not demonstrated proficiency may still be eligible to take specific courses; I can help you determine if you are eligible.
Meet eligibility requirements as established by IWCC in order to enroll including any pre-requisite requirements; I can help you determine if you are eligible.
Please keep in mind that just because a student qualifies to take college courses does not necessarily mean they are prepared to do so. Use discretion when selecting and enrolling in courses at this level. Ask yourself if you are disciplined enough to attend regularly and put forth the effort necessary to be successful.
The easiest way for me to assist with determining eligibility is for students to request registration using the Google form link included in the registration section below for a specific course(s) and I will then communicate whether the student is eligible to be enrolled.
Cost
The district covers the cost of tuition and fees for college credits through the concurrent enrollment program at IWCC for courses taken during the school calendar year (not summer). If the student wishes to earn additional college credit at IWCC, they can enroll and pay for the courses independently.
The price of the textbook(s) for the course will be covered by the district. If books are not returned by the deadline set by MVHS after each semester, then the student will be billed the full price for each book.
Transportation
The student is responsible for providing his or her own transportation to the IWCC campus.
IWCC occasionally cancels courses due to weather. If Missouri Valley cancels classes and IWCC is open, use your best judgment regarding whether or not you should travel to campus. If you do not attend, make sure to contact your instructor to let them know.
Orientation
· IWCC will conduct a student orientation in August prior to the start of school. Students and parents should plan to attend. Announcements will be made with dates and times.
Application
First time IWCC course takers must complete a New Student Application through IWCC prior to being registered for classes. If this is not completed, the student will not be officially registered to take the course and books will not be issued. To do so visit:
https://iwcc.elluciancrmrecruit.com/Apply/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2fApply
When choosing "Type of Student" ALWAYS CHOOSE "HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT"
If you have already filled out an application during enrollment in a previous course, then you will not need to do so again.
Click on the Application Instructions button below for step by step directions
There is two parts to the application. The second part begins when you see a dashboard that has a button to click that says "Start a New Application". Both parts must be completed before classes can be registered for.
Schedule
Students must be enrolled in a minimum of four academic classes including both their high school and college classes in order to meet eligibility requirements for participation in high school activities and athletics, as established by the Iowa Department of Education and to be eligible for honor student status.
Students will pre-select their IWCC courses during MVHS registration in the spring for the following year's semester 1 schedule. Semester 2 class registration will be advertised once it becomes available. IWCC only allows course registration one semester at a time for all students.
Any changes to your course schedule must be made through MVHS counselor
A week before classes start, log into your IWCC ROC account and verify that your courses are listed there. If they are not, please notify your counselor immediately.
After the first week of classes, your IWCC classes will be put on your infinite campus schedule under zero hour, this does nothing other than allow us to know what classes you are taken and enter a final grade.
For every college level class you take, you will be advised to take a study hall.
Priority will be given to classes required for graduation over any college credit course.
Course Selection
To determine what classes you want to take, visit the IWCC website's home page under the "Academics" heading. Here you will be able to search for classes under degree areas. You can take classes out of order as long as you meet any pre-requisites.
(clicking on the picture below will take you to this page)
Another way is to browse the course catalog. On the IWCC "Admissions" page. Click "Search for Classes" and you can look through all that is offered.

Registration
If you are interested in taking any courses through IWCC please submit a request HERE
If you are interested in taking classes for college credit with Mrs. Brinker/Mr. Dorland or at the Buss Center this will be done directly with the counselor, do not complete this form.
Please remember students must be enrolled in a minimum of four academic classes including both their high school and college classes in order to meet eligibility requirements for participation in high school activities and athletics, and to be eligible for honor student status.
Every student who wishes to take any courses through IWCC needs to submit a request. You will be registered into any course that you submit a request for unless Mrs. Marcum contacts you to discuss further, so please choose wisely.
Second Semester Courses Only: Students who are taking courses at the Buss center for classes will automatically be registered into the next set of classes for that school year, so these students do not need to submit a request. If you want to be removed from any of these programs please see Ms. Lassek prior to the start of the next semester.
To register for any classes please have this information prior to filling out your request:

Dropping Courses

Depending on the timing of your request, removing a course could mean any or multiple of the following:
Receive a Withdrawal (W) on your college transcript
Receive a letter grade F on your college transcript
Receive a letter grade F on your MV transcript
You may be required to take a course at MV to substitute for this class.
Mrs. Marcum will notify you if you will be impacted by any of those after you submit your request.
Requests must be made at least one full school day prior to any IWCC drop deadlines. If a deadline is a Monday, notice will need to be received by the Friday morning before. If you submit a request after this time, there are no guarantees that you will have been removed from the course(s) prior to the IWCC deadline.
You are responsible for any books or codes that were issued to you. You need to return any materials to the MVHS library immediately after your removal from the course. Failure to return materials are subject to fines and fees.
Textbooks
Once a student is officially registered into an IWCC course, IWCC will send their textbook(s) to MVHS. Students will be notified when they arrive.
It is the students responsibility to ensure that these materials are taken care of and returned to MVHS at the end of each semester. MVHS will pay for the cost of textbooks if the student returns the books at the end of the semester. If books are not received back at the end of courses, then the student will be billed the full price.
MVHS Librarian will be distributing and collecting all textbooks.
